Photoshop Keeps Crashing on ASUS Zenbook Flip Pro UP6502ZD

I purchased a Zenbook Flip Pro UP6502ZD a couple of weeks ago, which Creative Suite came bundled with.

Photoshop has been crashing over and over and again and Illustrator isn't stable.  Sometimes the entire program will crash, more often it will become unusably slow.

A few times now when I open Photoshop again it will say that my graphics card isn't compatible and only show the integrated Iris XE chip.  When I restart the computer, it will be fine again, showing as compatible with the Arc 370 card listed.

Sometimes the tool tips look like green artifacts.

According to Windows and My ASUS, the graphics drivers are up to date.  Windows updates are also up to date.

I've tried a second idental machine and the problem persists.  It is reproducable.  Seems very odd for a machine that is sold as being suitable to use Photoshop.

I'm at a loss what to try next,  any suggestions would be warmly received.  Thank you!

Hi,

I solved this issue to downgrading Photoshop to version 22.5.2

Works fine with no issues so far. I believe it is issue with E-cores on my i7 12700H. I found a bunch of topics with the same issue on Intel 12-th and 13-th generations, not only on laptops, but on PC as well.

Who knows who's mistake is this, but it is sad, that we can not use the latest Adobe software along with new Intel CPUs.

Hi @Inky Cat sorry to hear that.  A couple things to try:

1. Restart the computer and launc your CC app, then log out and then back in to your CC app, does the issue still happen?

2. Perform a clean install of Ps from the CC app and restart the computer, does the issue still happen?

Let's make sure we're in a default state and there are no stale settings somewhere:

Restore your preferences using this manual method:

https://helpx.adobe.com/photoshop/using/preferences.html#Manually

Does it work correctly?

If that doesn't solve it, you can quit Photoshop and put the Settings folder back.

It may help if we could see your Photoshop System Info. Launch Photoshop, and select Help >System Info...and copy/paste the text in a reply.

Thank you,

Hey @CoryShubert  thank you for the reply and instructions.

1) Restarting and logging out did not fix the issue.

2) I have reset my preferences as per your link.

Photoshop was crashing on the (second) brand new laptop within an hour of installing it.  Photoshop was the first and only thing I installed (other than Windows updates).  So I'm doubtful a clean install will help.  However if it keeps crashing after resetting the preferences, I will give that a try and report back.

Here is my system info:

Thank you for the sysinfo and the crash report. The team has let me know that this will be fixed in an upcoming driver release by NVidia.  Please check to see if the update is available for your system and let us know if this solves this issue.

Thank you,

I appreciate the reply @CoryShubert but this is not a solution.  I ask not using an Nvidia card, I am using an Intel Arc 370.

There are no updates available for my system.  Please can you ask your team again?

Please could you unmark this as the correct solution?  The problem still persists.

@Inky Cat does Ps crash when you are loading an image? Have you tried turing off all GPU usage in the Camera Raw plugin?

This is not the general prefs in Ps but specificlly the GPU preference in Camera Raw.

Another test would be to load a .psd instead of a .jpg, does the issue persist?

Hi,

I have exactly the same issue. I just have bought Asus Zenbook Flip (UP6502ZA), and Photoshop is crushing all the times.

I tried PS 22, and 23 as well. Does not work any version.

I also run a memtest, AIDA64 stress tests, everything looks ok. Changing refresh rate from 120Hz to 60Hz does not help, changing 10 bit to 8 bit does not help.

Asus Zenbook has only 16Gb of DDR5. Limiting Photoshop RAM usage even to 4Gb does not solve the crushing.

Bridge and PS simply closing after opening RAW file from my Canon EOS R.

I feel so sorry to face this kind of problem. Never had any issue like this. Before I have a Dell XPS 9500 laptop with dedicated Nvidia 1650 card. PS was working without any issue.

Now, even my plugins Imagenomic Portraiture and Topaz Denoise do not open.

The only one reason to feel sorry for Asus is OLED 120Hz screen. It is gorgeous, covers 100% of DCI-P3. Colors are bright, deep, and vivid! Blacks are truly black!

Shame for Asus not putting more efforts into bigger RAM (at least 32Gb), and placing RTX cards.

I appreciate this won't help you directly, but I've moved over to Affinity 2 and haven't looked back.

I suspect the Intel Arc drivers are immature, but this appears to be an Adobe issue.  I was losing my work multiple times a day in Creative Suite, I've had maybe one crash with Affinity.  I don't think it's a lack of memory.

I can't justify paying for creative suite when it behaves like this

I was using Adobe Creative Suite apps (PS, Bridge, and Premier) over 15 years, and afraid to switch to another software due to: other shortcuts, plugins support, workflow).

Definetely will try Affinity 🙂

I am on my way to return Asus Zenbook and order Dell XPS 9720 with the same i7 12700H, but dedicated RTX 3060, and 64Gb of DDR5...

Just returned ASUS flip pro with A370 because no amount of driver updates or bios updates stopped my brand new laptop form locking up completely after a few minutes of basic photoshop.  I'm going to try a Samsung book or HP spectre 360. maybe they integrated the 370 better but i'm afraid i'm going to have to settle for intel xe integrated graphics if i want a 2 in 1.

Intel ARC is terrible

Using an earlier version is not a solution, this is still bugged.

I am also not certain your issue is the same as mine.  Mine appeared to be an Arc graphics issue.

I do not understand why this has been marked as resolved.

I am currently gonig through the same issue. I have been forced to use my phone instead of my laptop. Just updated my drivers today, same results of crashing after minimal slider adjustments. I love my computer, and it works fine with any and everything else I had on my computer. ADOBE IS THE ONLY ISSUE! I've spoken to the automated reps and I would love to get someone on the phone to help me with my concerns. But I know that won't happen. Maybe foolishly I spend $19.99 (before tax) per month to use a program, better suited for my laptop, on my Samsung s22... at least I have a fancy stylus to use...

I was running into a graphics card issue with Photoshop which has been cleared, however... even with all green checks.... CRAAAASSSSSHHHHH  *hit reboot*

I am running the Arc Xe graphics card as well. It's frustrating when you can't get a good work flow because your too busy looking at a phone screen between calls and messages. FIX IT ADOBE!!!!

@Run29986834b3xp

Perhaps try a thorough reset of Photoshop preferences?

(read this entire post before acting please)

Resetting restores Photoshop's internal preferences, which are saved when Photoshop closes.

If they become corrupt then various issues can occur.

Here’s some info on how to do that:

https://helpx.adobe.com/photoshop/using/preferences.html

Manually removing preferences files is the most complete method for restoring Photoshop to its default state:

https://helpx.adobe.com/photoshop/using/preferences.html#Manually

Manually removing preferences files is the most complete method for restoring Photoshop to its default state. This method ensures all preferences and any user presets which may be causing a problem are not loaded.

  1. Quit Photoshop.

  2. Navigate to Photoshop's Preferences folder.
macOS: Users/[user name]/Library/Preferences/Adobe Photoshop [version] Settings
Windows: Users/[user name]/AppData/Roaming/Adobe/Adobe Photoshop [version]/Adobe Photoshop [version] Settings

Note: The user Library folder is hidden by default on macOS. To access files in the hidden user Library folder, see How to access hidden user library files.
  3. Drag the entire Adobe Photoshop [Version] Settings folder to the desktop or somewhere safe for a back-up of your settings

  4. Open Photoshop.

New preferences files will be created in their original location.

Note re macOS: The user Library folder is hidden by default.

To access files in the hidden user Library folder, see here for how to access hidden user library files.

https://helpx.adobe.com/x-productkb/global/access-hidden-user-library-files.html

Unexpected behaviour may indicate damaged preferences. Restoring preferences to their default settings is a good idea when trying to troubleshoot unexpected behaviours in Photoshop. check out the video

https://helpx.adobe.com/photoshop/using/preferences.html#reset_preferences

Learn how to access and modify Photoshop preferences and customise per your frequent workflows

https://helpx.adobe.com/photoshop/using/preferences.html

And here’s an earlier forum discussion as an aid to understanding

https://community.adobe.com/t5/photoshop-ecosystem-discussions/quick-tips-how-to-reset-photoshop-pre...

You may want to backup your settings and custom presets, brushes & actions before restoring Photoshop's preferences.

Here is general info about that:  https://helpx.adobe.com/photoshop/using/preferences.html#BackupPhotoshoppreferences

Before you reset your preferences

in case of future issues, I suggest you make a copy as Adobe may need one to check problematic references.

Quit Photoshop.
Go to Photoshop's Preferences folder

Preferences file locations: https://helpx.adobe.com/photoshop/kb/preference-file-names-locations-photoshop.html\

[on MacOS see: Users/[user name]/Library/Preferences/Adobe Photoshop [version] Settings

Note for those on macOS: - be aware that the user Library folder is hidden by default on macOS.

  https://helpx.adobe.com/x-productkb/global/access-hidden-user-library-files.html

In the Finder, open the “Go” menu whilst holding down the Option (Alt) key.

Library will now appear in the list - below the current user's “home” directory. ]

Now you can drag the entire Adobe Photoshop [Version] Settings folder to the desktop or somewhere safe as a back-up of your settings.

Note for those on macOS:

Preference preservation is affected by macOS permissions,

you’ll need to allow Photoshop ‘Full Disk Access’ in your Mac OS Preferences/Security and Privacy

If that doesn't fix the issue:

Go to Preferences > Performance... and uncheck Multithreaded Compositing - and restart Photoshop.

Still hanging?

Go to Preferences > Performance... click Advanced Settings... and uncheck "GPU Compositing" - then restart Photoshop.

Do you still have problems?

It may even be time to reinstall Photoshop.

It’s recommended that you use the Adobe CC cleaner tool to remove all traces first.

(See above about preserving preferences though! It’s worth preserving them unless they are corrupted.)

https://helpx.adobe.com/creative-cloud/kb/cc-cleaner-tool-installation-problems.html

Uninstall Photoshop BUT make sure to choose the option “Yes, remove app preference”.

Once that process finishes, start the installation process and look into the “Advanced Options”. Uncheck “Import previous settings and preferences” and choose to “Remove old versions”.

I hope this helps
