Photoshop Stuck Saving at 0% on M1 Ultra

I recently received an M1 Ultra (64 GB of Ram, 2TB of Storage), and I've had multiple occasions where Photoshop just hangs at 0% (sometimes 10%) and I have to Force Quit and then recover the files via auto-save recovery. I did a search but nothing came up, I'm hoping this is something already on the Photoshop team's radar (but it doesn't look like it via the known issues).
M1 Ultra - 64 GB of Ram, 2TB of Storage
Photoshop 22.3.4
Mac Montery 12.4
Cintiq 22HD for my screen
I understand it's a newish computer / chip but it's been touted by both Apple and Adobe to be working well - when it's not, especially a core product has such a basic flaw.

Hi @WScottForbes sorry to hear this.
A system hang or freeze requiring a computer restart usually means a low level failure such as a driver (bad video card driver, etc), failing hardware (hard disk, video card, etc.) or damaged OS installation.
Curious if you have tried another monitor to see if the issue is with the Cintiq?
It may help if we could see your Photoshop System Info. Launch Photoshop, and select Help >System Info...and copy/paste the text in a reply.
Thank you,

In addition to Cory's suggestions and requests, @WScottForbes, I'd be curious if you see this same behavior using Photoshop 23.4.2?

PG

I just upgraded so I hope that fixes it but I will update it if it doesn't.

@CShubert Unfortunately that's not the case. Besides it being a brand new machine and working perfectly fine. It's 100% a Photoshop issue as I am still able to fully work and use Photoshop when this error is happening, I just can no longer save as one document is stuck at 0%.

Hi @WScottForbes ,
Have you tried disabling the GPU option? Photoshop > Preferences > Performance > Use Graphics Processor?
You may also want to try resetting Photoshop preferences. https://helpx.adobe.com/photoshop/using/preferences.html
Let us know how you go

@mj This is a fresh install, bordering on maybe a week of having the computer / having Photoshop. I'm assuming it's something to do with the M1 Chip but we will see.

Hi @WScottForbes ,
I'm running Ps on an M1 Max chip, and don't seeem to be able to recreate the problem you're experiencing.
I can try to recreate the glitch if you share how your file was created.
Hopefully that way we can determine if it is Silicon or Ps.

Hi There.
I alomost have the same problem by using a Mac Studio Ultra and PS 23.4.1.
A file that is 2160x2700 and not many layers will not save. The saving process stops at 0%. I canceled the process.
I have also created a new empty file, dragged all layers over and now want to save it under a new name. Now I am shown that there are 2 files in the queue ... just the one from before and the new one.
Even if I close the first file completely and want to save the new one, the old file reappears in the queue and blocks the saving of the new file as well.

I get this exact same problem, cancelled the same, made a new document but the old file is still trying to save in a cue

I have got the same issue but am on a mac studio Max. This has only been happening since yesterday and seems to be I think when I go in to modify a smart object. It wont save.
I haven't upgraded to the most recent photoshop upgrade, so will try it now and see if its better.

Hi,
Seems to be a Ps thing, the way this conversation is developing.
Thankfully we have @Pete.Green and @CShubert on the thread.
Any advice you guys?
Best

Hi everyone, here are a couple things to try. Please let us know if either works for your issue.
- Skip loading 3rd party plugins launch , which might tell us if plugin is causing the issue.
- Try Preferences->File Handling, turn off “Save In Background”. This will turn off Auto Recovery and may help us identify if Save has some issue.
Here is a page on plugins and troubleshooting: https://helpx.adobe.com/photoshop/kb/plug-ins-photoshop-troubleshooting.html

Thanks for the support.
I am using the actual pixelsquid plugin and it is use in all of my works over years now. On my side the issue appears in one of of 10 works since a few days. Actualy i have a new file with a lots of layers of the plugin and it works without the problem. Will try turning off "save in background". I also updated to the newest PS Version today. Hope that helps.
Thanks and greetings Ingo

It seems to be good (so far) with the latest updated but I can 100% confirm a PS bug as I don't have any plugins or extra settings as I'm still setting up my new computer.

So I updated both PS and mac OS to the latest and from my usage so far I haven't had the issue. Hopefully, it's sorted out what was happening. I also restarted after doing the updates. The other thing to add is that the issue doesn't happen straight away necessarily, last time I had been using the computer for a good number of hours prior to it happening.

Hi @ingol55091394 , please double check that background save is off as resetting the preferences will turn it ON!
Please let us know if that works.

It also would be helpful to get a spindump during the hang:
- Find the Finder icon in your Dock.
- Right-click on the icon, then click New Finder Window.
- Select the Applications option on the left-side panel.
- Open the Utilities folder and open Activity Monitor.
- Select zoom.us, click the settings icon , and select Spindump.
Thank you,

I have the esame problem with these specs
M1 Ultra - 128GB, 8TB storage
Photoshop 23.2.2
Mac Montery 12.4
Wacom Intuos Pro M (PTH-651)
I have various scripts i run which seem to be broken on anything past PS 23.3
I work on very large psb files ranging from 3 to 14GB and even when it does save it takes hangs for more than 3mins at 0% before it does start saving.
It has failed and been stuck on 0% for more than 40mins though before i killed the app.

It definitely seems linked to smart layers.
I have an 8bit PSB document that is 5.63GB with multiple smart layers within it.
If i rasterize all my smart layers the pause at saving 0% goes from 3mins 20secs down to a more expected 8 secs

Any news that solved the problem? After some days of haveing no problems and working with several files it happened again. I see we are all working on a Mac M1 ... Max or Ultra. Could this be the problem?
Thanks Ingo

I'm running in Rosetta mode at the moment, it may be slower but the problem hasn't occured in this mode yet....
Fingers crossed it doesn't.
