Photoshop suddenly won't open NEF files

I just returned from a very expensive trip to Alaska, and just tried opening my NEF images on my Windows PC, but receive this error message: "Could not complete your request because it is not the right kind of document." Photoshop CC worked perfectly fine on other NEF files until just now. It is NOT a case of corrupted files - I've tried opening older NEF files saved previously and receive the same error message. Further, when I try viewing the files on my iPad, I have no problem - they display fine. What the heck is going on with Photoshop CC?

What are the exact Photoshop and Camera Raw versions you are using an what is the camera model? 

What have you done for all-purpose trouble-shooting so far?
