Photoshop swapping back to previous tool used without a keypress

Hi there. I've been using Photoshop for years but the piles of bugs just keep coming and it's really killing my drive to want to stick with Adobe products. My latest issue is I'll be using a brush, hit my keybind for my eraser, and while I'm erasing, Photoshop will automatically swap back to my brush. As you might imagine, this is highly frustrating because I'm trying to lift up brush strokes, not put more. It does it with any tool. I've swapped from my eraser to the lasso tool and mid lassoing, it will swap to the eraser. It also goes the other way, where I'll be lassoing something, I'll swap to my brush, and Photoshop will automatically swap to my lasso which is very unhelpful for laying paint. Can someone tell me how to fix this? Or if it's a feature, how to turn it off because I can't find it?
