Photoshop: white rectangle instead of image

My new updated Photoshop is giving me several problems.  First, often when I open it up I get a white rectangle rather than my photo.  Then the various modes don't seem to be working correctly.  For instance where I put it on screen mode nothing happens.  Can someone help me with these problems?
