Prefer Photoshop 6

Can't go back to my own personal Photoshop 6 and still use current operating system, use a new computer or to connect to the web, so I went ahead and subscribed. I really don't like the experience so far. Way too many dialog boxes show up. A few key stroke shortcuts were changed like lasso, command "F", smudge etc. for seemingly no reason, transform went wonky, brushes changed in ways I still have yet to figure out, oil paint was hidden, refine edge became needlessly complex and pink lines around everything were annoying. I slowly learned how to shut the distracting stuff off, got back legacy shortcuts. My problem was that I used Photoshop 6 for 20 years. That's a lot of muscle memory. Now, it seems things still annoy if, God forbid, I close Photoshop, even with my workspace saved, I still manage to forget something and it reverts back to confusing like the annoying intro page instead of just the file opening page of Photoshop. Every time I turn that distracting intro page off, it seems to come back after I close Photoshop and restart. Another thing, if I work for too long , Photoshop starts to get weird with delays and spinning balls, so I close it to trash my preferences upon opening it again and things work until the next time it gets quirky. Each time I have to find my saved workspace so everything doesn't go back to annoying. I wish I could have my own photoshop again and not have to subscribe. The software has done well for me, I just don't trust the changes, and, at least for me, it's buggy. For soemone new to Photoshop, I'm sure it's great. I'm a dinosaur, so it makes me feel extinct.

The point is, maybe I can suggest that change for the sake of change is not always desirable, and maybe don't fix something that aint broke. But, that's just me. I feel like and addict who got used to a primo drug and the dealer changed to formula. I love Photoshop. I don't like change. Again, those not used to old Photoshop won't care.

I started with Photoshop 7.0, not 6.0, but would never wish to go back. Over the years features were added and later removed, such as 3D, others stood the test of time and went on to be and essential part of a workflows, such as Smart Objects, Content Aware tools. Then, as you mention above, there is support for new operating systems and use of modern hardware with much larger and faster disk drives, and fast and more capable CPUs and GPUs.

If Photoshop just stood still and froze in time, then it would cease to be relevant and die out.

On your issue with the Home Screen, go to Preferences > General and uncheck 'Auto Show the Home Screen'. Open a document, close it and you shouldn't see the home screen again.
You may also want to check "Use Legacy "New Document" Interface if you prefer the older look when starting a new document.

Thanks. I was able to figure out most things due to help from people like you. For some reason a few things still revert back for seemingly no reason. My problem was never with any of the things you mentioned, just simple annoyances as far as how they affect me, slowing me down in order to change back to legacy.

One last reason to post is that maybe someone can suggest a reason that the spinning ball shows up after using Photoshop for 20 hours or so. The problem is fixed after opening with command, option, shift and trashing my preferences, but that solves the issue only temporarily. I'm in Catalina. If I go further, my peripherals might not work.

Here it is. My problem is with peripherals I have to eventually change if I want to use the latest operating system. I'm still in Catalina because I like the Wacom Intuos 3 and a speedpad for shortcut key, an old Nostromo gaming pad from 20 years ago. It's also why my computer is an iMac 27 inch from 2017 with 64 gig memory. It might not be enough. Anyhow, I will be getting a M2 Studio next year. It will probably take care of problems, in the meantime what are your thoughts as to the spinning beachball after 20 hours or so of work?

Me siento identificado con tu desahogo. El complejo mundo de Photoshop parece que nos lleva a tener que especializarnos en áreas. Adecuar, en definitiva la herramienta, a nuestras necesidades particulares. Y no dejarla de ver como eso: una herramienta y no un fin. Las ayudas son múltiples y dispersas. Me recuerdan cuando hace muchos años tuve que estudiar la reforma fiscal de mi país y las normas subsiguientes, que estaban llenas de enlaces a otras normas hasta que pasados varios años se unificaban en textos legislativos homogéneos. Entiendo que dado el universo tecnológico abierto, seguramente la situación, sigo refiriéndome a las ayudas, no puede ser de otro modo. Pero echo de menos un espíritu más alemán que cuyas instrucciones en sus productos contemplan todos los pormenores. Así, hasta los limitados como uno, encuentran siempre respuesta a sus preguntas sin ir dando bandazos. Por otra parte, com otro usuario decía no hace mucho en este foro, las innovaciones tan frecuentes suelen aparejar una obsolescencia más rápida de nuestro equipamiento, lo que encarece la fórmula de la suscripción vía planes. Me he apuntado a esta comunidad para, leyendo las publicaciones, ir encontrando cosas de interés para mis necesidades específicas. Me asombra el nivel adquirido por algunos. Y, a veces, siento que el tiempo que me absorbe Photoshop me lo está restando, siendo herramienta, a lo que más me gusta que es hacer fotos. Y, ahora, se suma la IA. ¿Cuántos campos creativos engloba Photoshop? En fin, lo dicho, yo aprovecho tu publicación para explayarme con mi propio desahogo.

Which Photoshop version are you using? The current version (v25) recommends macOS Big Sur (v11.0) or later

v23.0 is listed as compatible with Catalina as is v22 (although you may find only 25, 24 and 22.2 available to install from the desktop app. Adobe's policy is to make available, for download, the current and previous major versions only (although 22.2 was extended due to it having some 3D functionality that was later removed).

If I go to Big Sur, my Nostromo speedpad and Wacom tablet become worthless. 22.2 Photoshop kinda works for me now. Later versions might not be so buggy. I really to need to get used to a new computer, new Wacom tablet and new speedpad design.

I thought I could get away with the iMac from 2017. It may just be not enough memory for Photoshop at 64 gig. I went from an old cheese grater MacPro with a ton of memory, but it only went to Mojave with the help of a metal graphics card, to the iMac. I should have got an iMac pro with more memory.

64 GB Ram should be more than enough for most Photoshop applications. What will make a difference is the scratch disk, in terms of free space and transfer speed, as well as the GPU on recent versions of Photoshop. More functionality is being moved toward the GPU. There are switches in Preferences - Technology previews to try if you have issues with an older GPU.

The iMac's card is a Radeon Pro 580 8 GB, which is pretty good.I'm going to open up the mac and stick an SSD drive in there to replace the broken fusion drive and dedicate it to scratch. I'm using as thunderbolt NVME exterior drive to run the system now. Hopefully the scratch SSD will make some difference. The system is 4.2 Quad Core Intel Core i7.

Yikes! Running the OS off a thunderbolt drive is cringe.

The 2017 iMac thunderbolt ports maxed out (at peak efficiency) at 40 gb/s meaning you are severely throttled with r/w access to the system and applications. In comparison an internal SSD clocks in at 3,500 gb/s

I'm thinking of putting in an NVME inside. It's a bit of a challenge to reach, but not impossible. So, you think that's way faster?

Yeah NVMEs start at 3,000 gb/s and go up from there. My only concern is a) power needs from the iMac and b) heat. I've never cracked open a Retina iMac before so not sure if these concerns are legit or not.

I looked into it, no heat issues. OWC has a thermal control cable and chip, but I heard that was unnecessary. Maybe I'll put it in just in case.

I think to simply replace the fusion drive with a standard won't get me more than 500 mps. The exterior is around 1300 mps. It's one of those little NVMEs in an enclosure from OWC.

There is a kit from OWC that provides an NVME for the slot that the SSD part of the fusion drive is located. Many tutorials on line. If you think it's going to improve my situation, then I'll go for it. I'm pretty handy with stuff like that. I just didn't think it would be that much faster.

I have the Intuos 3. It's ancient and Wacom said the last useable operating system was Catalina. I already have a new tablet, it's just that it feels different in every way and I have to get used to that all over again.
