I am considering changing software for my photographic work due to Adobes systems being unreliable and expensive and upon that you cannot get support for old software which you have bought for a lot of money.
Anyone else wants to comment on this ?

Hi @Claus16B8, Let's try to fix this issue for you! First, let's try a few things and see if I understand the issue correctly.
1. Check the Preset File Location: Ensure the correct .psd file is located in the appropriate directory. For example, in older versions like Photoshop CC 2018, the path was: AppData\Roaming\Adobe\Adobe Photoshop [version]\Adobe Photoshop [version] Settings\
If a .psd file is in this folder, Photoshop may misinterpret it.
2. Remove or Replace the Faulty File: If a .psd file is mistakenly placed in the presets folder, move it out of the folder, restart Photoshop, and see if the error persists.
3. Reset Photoshop Preferences: try manually resetting your Photoshop preferences - https://helpx.adobe.com/ie/photoshop/using/preferences.html#Manually
* Remember to back up your settings before doing the preference reset
https://helpx.adobe.com/ie/photoshop/using/preset-migration.html
4. Reinstall Photoshop or Use the Adobe Cleaner Tool: If the issue persists, a clean reinstall using the https://helpx.adobe.com/creative-cloud/kb/cc-cleaner-tool-installation-problems.html may help.
If none of these steps work, we would like a few more details to better help with this issue. Can you send your system info so we can try replicating it? You can find this by going to Help > System Info, copying and pasting it into a text file, and attaching it here. Thanks! ^CH

By @Semaphoric
It makes you wonder where the PSD files came from? It might be that another user saved from a more recent version, and did not have Backward Compatability maxed. John, it was you who pointed out the importance of that when I was having problems with Displacement Maps a few years ago.
@claus16B8 if you are using CS6 or older, and the PSD files giving you problems were supplied by another user, ask them to save them again with this Preference setting
