proplem with smart object

when I have a smart object in photoshop I cannot open it in illustrator on m 1 MacBook

What file does Layer > Smart Objects > Export Contents create? (edit: pdf, ai, …?)

What happens when you try to open it? Do you get an error message and if so, what is it?
