After a luminance mask selection in the PS module Camera Raw, I used the brush tool "Subtract from selection" which was time-consuming and took a long time,
at some point the brush tool stopped responding! I waited some time to see if Camera Raw responded again, but no response,
the mouse pointer responded but I couldn't perform any other functions in CameraRaw, I couldn't exit or exit Camera Raw, and I couldn't terminate PS via the taskbar!
I was only able to end PS via the task manager!
After a PS restart, I called up and started the 'PS user Diagnostic', but only got a 'Program error message - I assume from the diagnostic tool itself!

I am sorry you have having problems. Thank you for letting us know. Is this a problem you can make happen again, or did it just happen one time? The best way for us to find a solution is to find a way to make this freeze happen consistently.
Thanks for your patience,
David

Have you seen this problem again? Is it possible for you to share your test file, so I can try to reproduce the peoblem with your photo? Thanks.

I've had only partial "success" in reproducing the CameraRaw filter freeze!
My procedure via masking add selection filter 'luminance range' -> luminance range and then removing the 'object' masking contamination via subtraction -
using 'brush' took a long time but was able to complete the action successfully without CameraRaw hanging!
To mask the background again and then invert the masking - I used 'Select Sky', this worked well for the background too,
to remove some masking overlays at the Object, I used 'Subtract' brush, I was able to do a few brush strokes,
then the brush no longer reacted (the mouse pointer/brush could still be moved) but no button could be clicked,
after a few seconds PhotoShop crashed as a whole!
A possible reason for the crash could be my computer capacity!
In some work steps, the 'reactions' to the setting controls or setting tools react with a slight delay!
If I then apply - e.g. apply the Subtraction brush - too fast in a row, and without waiting for the execution,
CameraRaw can't keep up with the execution of the command and 'give up'!
But this was 2 PS Uptates ago! (Date of trying:0202.22)

Thank you for the additional information.
After Photoshop crashed, did a dialog appear about submitting the crash log to Adobe? If you send in a crash log via our crash reporter, that can really help.
Can you send me your system info from Photoshop? From the Help menu, select System Info and then use the copy button.
Can you send me your PSD file? I would like to try to recreate yoru steps on a similar computer to see if I can make Camera Raw crash.
I think you are correct that your computer's capacity affects performance. The more brush strokes are added to a file the more computational work Camera Raw has to do to render the result, and so the responivness can start to lag on slower computers (especially when the image size and yoru display size are large). That said, we really don't want Camera Raw to crash, even when the computers's resources are stressed.
Thank you,
David

hallo David,
I'm sorry for answering so late, After the last PS updates, PS and CamersRaw run more smoothly on my system (without noticeable delays) I can no longer reproduce the crash that happened at the time! But Leithroom is bitchy now,
I wanted to remove some sensor spots with the repair brush this evening - with a 100% view - Lightroom reacted very hesitantly, like CameraRaw back then, when executing the command, delayed in execution! When I noticed the "sluggishness" I slowed down, but Lightroom didn't freeze or even crash! it's just annoying to have to wait longer for command execution!
Thank you
Charly

Try a Reset of the Camera Raw preferences: Hold down the Command/Control key and select Photoshop > Preferences > Camera Raw. Any better?
