I found ancient documentation of the problem, too, back to CS6. Settings and preferences have changed.

On MacOS use Cmd-Shift-3 to capture your screen and save it to a file. Use Cmd-Shift-4 to marquee select a portion of the screen that you want to point to. Mark up those screenshots in Photoshop to draw attention to the issue in question. One way is to select a part of the area using the Marquee Tool and Edit > Stroke to give it a visible color outline.
Next, using the Forum reply toolbar, click on Insert Photos, and upload your screenshots.

I notice in your paragraph panel, the middle button is pressed. Try the leftmost button.
You might have to delete and re-enter the text. Also at the bottom use the left button if you have it.

No, unfortunately, the alignment doesn't make a difference. I've updated everything and tried on new documents, but nothing seems to solve this annoying problem.

Have a look at the Character Panel settings as well as your Mac Keyboard settings.
You also have Reset Character and Reset Paragraph in that menu.
Maybe try a similar but different font.
Reset the Type Tool in the Options Bar:
Ctrl + Click (or Right-click) on the T for the Reset menu.
If that doesn't help,
Try Resetting Photoshop Prefs on Quit. I personally would suggest to save and name your workspace so you don't lose it. Every goes to Essentals default.
