questions about using extended licenses

New Here ,
Jun 22, 2025 Jun 22, 2025

I would love some clarity on this... do you need an extended license to use an adobe stock photo on physical products you want to sell, regardless of how much you change it ?  for example if you were to use a stock photo of a realistic colored skull and you convert it into a black & white threshhold/ dithertone or use the "create outlines" tool in illustrator and its not the only point of intererst on the piece (poster, shirt, ect.) , would you still need an extended license?

also if you are doing freelance and are paid to create art for a product of another persons brand, would the brand your making it for be the one responsible to buy the extended license? or could I buy the license on their behalf to create the art for the product?

anyone who could help clarify it would be much appreciated. I know these are some kind of confusing questions. I attached some examples, I take real life images and convert them to look like these. None of these are for sale or physical products at this point, just for personal use. But i would like to make physical products for sale and I need to know what is allowed. If these were adobe stock photos would I need an extended license to make them into products for sale?

Thank you!

Yes, Adobe Stock assets can be used for commercial purposesMost assets come with a standard license that allows for various commercial uses, such as in print ads, brochures, presentations, websites, and more. However, some assets are marked "editorial use only" and should not be used for commercial purposes.

Here's a more detailed breakdown:

  • Standard License:
Most Adobe Stock assets are covered by a standard license, which allows for commercial use in a wide range of applications.
  • Editorial Use Only:
Assets marked as "editorial use only" are not for commercial use and should only be used for news or journalistic purposes.
  • Reproductions:
The standard license typically allows for a certain number of reproductions, such as 500,000 copies.
  • Modifications:
You can generally edit the assets you license, but your modifications should not violate any intellectual property rights or portray the author or model negatively.
  • Exclusive Rights:
Adobe Stock does not offer exclusive licenses for its assets.
