Quick Selection Tool no longer recognises Layer Masks

My quick select tool suddenly stopped registering layer masks: had no issues before, but a couple days ago, after erasing on a layer mask, quick selection started to only select the original contours of the layer, completely ignoring changes made on it.

Which feature did I accidentally turn on here?

If you'd like the Quick Selection Tool to select the object in the layer content minus the layer mask, then try converting the layer to a smart object before making the selection (right-click and select Convert to Smart Object or go to Layer > Smart Objects > Convert to Smart Object).

When you make the Smart Object, include the layer mask.

Does not work for me unfortunately, even when I'm using a smart object, it still won't register the layer mask.
