Quickmask works differently in new version

For years I clicked on quickmask at the bottom of the toolbar and then drag the gradient tool through the image and get the red mask indicator, click on the quickmask and get the selection. When I try this with the newest version, I get the gradient, not the red mask indicator over the image. I did a work around by creating a layer mask and dragging the gradient tool over the mask to make my gradient selection. Is there a new way to implement the quickmask or am I stuck with the workaround?

Thanks to those who know more than me,

Joe

With the Gradient Tool selected enable Classic Gradient in the tool options bar before using in the Quick Mask Mode.
