Photoshop has started generating an error messsage and must close soon after I open and edit a particular file (I haven't actually also tried working on other files to see if the problem is duplicated).  The file is 11.5 GB so it's big but not crazy big, I've certainly worked with much larger oens, and I've never had a problem with this file before.  I don't know if it's useful but I've pasted in the error report below.  I restarted my computer and also reset Preferences.  Is there any way to troubleshoot this further?  Thanks.

11.5 GB is "crazy" big. Is the file saved as a psd or psb file format? What is your available HD and Scratch Disk space?

A PSB.  Thanks for helping my troubleshoot the issue.  As I stated in my other post, PS had changed my computer's hard drive to be the Scratch Disk (not the external drive with considerably more space) - and I don't seem to be having problems now.

As Kevin stated - why do you need such a huge file.

Which version of Photoshop and OS?

How much RAM and spare hard disk capacity do you have?

Thank you.  I composite photographs to be printed huge, whch is why I need large files.  I hear this a lot (that my files are too big) but Adobe says a PSB can be over 4.2 billion GB.   So ... is 11 GB really too big?  I get the feeling most people don't work with files this large and my question is, is it really "impractical" or "unnecessary" to do so, or does it actually logistically present a problem?  I usually don't have a problem.  And I checked my Scratch disk, and Photoshop had reverted to my C drive - not my external drive where I have over 1330 GB available for the Scratch disk.  So I'm guessing that was the issue.

RAM:  32 GB installed 31.8 usable

Photoshop: 23.4.2 Release

OS:  Windows 11

Free disk space:  735 GB

Too big means too big for you system. 11 GB with only 735 GB free space is not enough. You were running out of disk space while working on these hence the error.

Changing the scratch disk will buy you some time but even 1330 is not enough if you are working on an 11 GB file, that only gives you around 10 steps of history before you start running out of disk space.

This is a common mistake. You do not have to work 1:1 with full size images for large print.

Commercial printers will increase your image size/res when printing on large format printers.

You should really talk to your printer about what size and resolution you should be working in and reduce scale to save disk space.

Thank you.  What is the rule of thumb for how much free disk space you need?

Regarding my image sizes, they are a function of the pixel dimensions of the composited files and of the number of image and adjustment layers in the file.  When I send them to be printed, I flatten them and eport them as TIFFs, which makes them smaller files.  Before that, I really don't know how I would make them "smaller."  Is that what you are suggesting, and do you have thoughts?  Thank you.

Find out from your printer what the submitted output size (dimensions, resolution) is required. That is your starting image/canvas size for a single layer file. Anything you add after that will obviously increase the layer size, including if you are embedding smart objects.

I would see about getting a larger external SSD drive for your Scratch Disk.

As I'm sure you know, the benchmark PPI for *fine art* prints (or maybe prints of any kind) is 300.  My printer will go down to around 195 for the largest file I would create (usually in the area of 4 ft. high and 5-15 ft. wide).  So is what you're suggesting *downsize* my file based on that figure, working with a smaller file than the one I would normally generate?  Also, I did research on how to calculate how much scratch disk space you need.  It said multiply the size of your file by the number of history states, then add the size of your image.  So for a 11 GB file, if I have 50 history states, I need 550 GB + 11 GB = 561 GB scratch disk space.  Does that sound about right?  Thanks.

The final "working"file would be a PSB and that would contain multiple layers (in most cases).  Before printing, it would be flattened and exported as a TIFF.

Photoshop is crashing with such an error message on my Lenovo Y520 laptop almost every time I use it and the file size I'm working with is no where near as big as yours. One similiarty we share is that I too am using a computer with a NVIDIA 1050ti graphics card. I've reset preferences, and trashed the font cache (per Adobe's recommendation) all to no avail. Crashes often occur when using the object selection tool and when shutting down. Open documents can be closed and even then when I quit the app an error message is frequently encoutered while attempting to quit.

I'm so glad you mentioned this.  My crashes happen when I'm using the Quick Selection tool.  I had a similar experience about a year ago with another file.  A big file - but it posed no problems except when using Quick Selection.  Once I changed to the Magnetic Lasso tool (which in ways I like better) all worked fine.  Now I'm not having the problem, having unchecked my C drive as the Scratch Disk and using my 2 external hard drives.  So I wonder if it's a combination of the graphics card, drive space, and the tool.  Or some combination of the 3.
