Adobe has lost it's way. The rectangle tool worked. Now it's complexified. I want to crop an image. Back in the day, you drew a rectangle and you did the crop/ Now it's automatically filled and one had to screw around with it to try to make it work. Good design is invisible. You simply do. I build front ends for systems so I know a little bit. Complexification is easy, simplification is not. Tell the front end guys to channel Jobs. Don't make me think.

The Rectangle tool is one of the Vector Shape tools and has never been used for cropping an image.

 

There are two ways to crop:

  • Rectangle Marquee tool followed by Edit menu > Crop
  • Crop tool

 

"Back in the day" there were no Shape tools. They were first introduced in 2000 with Photoshop 6.0.
