In your example there isn't any contrast to work with.
Every selection algorithm relies on one pixel being visibly different from the neighboring pixel. If they're not different, there's nothing to separate. An algorithm doesn't "know" what a donkey is - but you do.
Try again, just for demonstration purposes, with something like dark hair against a light background. Then you'll see it does work.
