Removing low contrast background SMART

Hey Guys:). I want to start discussion about removing backgourd of low contrast photos. FOr example in attached picture, how would You start? Some adjustment layers with levels/contrast and then select color range ? Just thinking about how to do it smart without pen 🙂

I'm a product photographer and the easiest way to start is to use a Levels layer to increase contrast. See attached.
