Saving a png to PSD, the PSD saves with white background, not transparent

I'm saving a png to a PSD but the PSD saves with a white background instead of transparent.  I've never had this problem before!  Very frustrating.

I save it in Photoshop and get transparent file (see it after importing PSD into Illustrator). Try to reset preferences.May be something has been changed.

What version of Photoshop and operating system are you using?

Are you viewing the saved psd in another application besides Photoshop?

If a PNG originally had a transparent background, before saving the Photoshop version check these things:

  • In the Layers panel, make sure the bottom layer is not named Background with a lock on it. If it is, that’s an opaque background.
  • In the Save As dialog box, make sure the Layers box is enabled. If it’s disabled, the documen will be flattened (transparency removed).

As you have seen in the past, if you simply open a transparent PNG file in Photoshop, make no changes, and save that as PSD, the transparency is preserved. So if you’re losing the transparency now, you may have to start over with that PNG file (go back to the first step of opening it with Photoshop) and figure out what step along the way makes it lose its transparency.
