Seeking help: generative fill won't fill

Hello community, hoping you can help me understand something that should be simple.

I have an image that I shot, and in PS rotated it to be level.

This produced edges that are blank, and I need to use generative fill to "fix" these (screenshot attached).

When I select the checkerboard (empty) "triangle" on the left edge, I cannot get generative fill to actually fill this in.

If I try to use generative crop (see the left margin line that shows where I need the final image's left edge to be), the result fills in the area beyond the rectangular image frame, so the triangular section is still blank.

I've tried flattening the image, removing the margin lines I use for croping guides, etc.

No joy.

I'm sure I'm doing something wrong, but various tutorials I've looked at haven't helped.

Hoping someone can give me a step-by-step, explain-it-like-you're-talking-to-a-slow-idiot explanation on how to get this filled in and working.  (content-aware fill is not the answer, btw).

Thanks for your help!!!
