Shutting down Photoshop takes long time

Hi all,

When I quit Photoshop in Mac, it takes 8 seconds before it completely shuts down. During that time Apples spinning wheel appears. This happens every time when I shut it down.

Now I find this very odd that it takes such a long time for Ps to shut down. I have MacBook Pro, 16gb ram with ssd. On the other hand quitting bridge is instant for example.

Does anyone knows why this shutting down is taking such a long time and if this can be fixed?

I have latest version of Photoshop 2019CC and MacOS Mojave Version 10.14.4

Hi there,

Could you please post your Help > System Info here?

Also, please try deselecting "Use Graphics Processor" located in Photoshop's Preferences > Performance, then relaunch Photoshop and let us know if it helps.

Also, make sure that there are no other apps running in the background.

Hi Sahil,

Now when I disable 'Graphic Processor', indeed problem goes away. But I need to have it enabled. I know some time ago I had another problem, and had found out that enabling 'Graphic Processor' had fixed the issue.

What processes does Photoshop perform when shutting down I wonder? Cleaning up any temporary files from Scratch space is an obvious thing, and you could maybe semi test that. Check the root directory of your primary scratch drive, and see if Photoshop closes more quickly when there are no temp files to tidy up, or if it takes longer when there are very large temp files.

Do you use creative cloud space to store assets? Do you have a lot in your CC library?
Do you have Generator checked in Preferences > Plug-ins? All things that would require Photoshop to upload information before closing possibly. We could do with someone from the Development Team to give us a better understanding on exactly what happens when Photoshop shuts down.

I have made a factory rest of MacOS 2 days ago. I have downloaded Photoshop clean of any plugin or any other temp files.

I don't use cc to store assets. Maybe a preset or action here and there but thats all.

Has anybody found the solution to this yet? I notice the last post was in 2019, has Adobe just ignored this? I find it VERY frustrating when trying to get closed down to go home at night. Both Photoshop AND Indesign do this. Every other program (including illustrator) close down within seconds, PS & ID take almost 3 minutes to close. I don't mind programs helping to keep data safe by making sure it's saved properly, but could it not do this in the background when the computer is running in the main part of my day, instead of stopping me getting home to my bed?

Have you tried radically cleaning out presets (Patterns, Styles, Brushes, …)?

Are you working with lots of Smart Objects (of considerable size)?

I really can't see how cleaning out any presets would make any difference, but aside from that, if the presets are installed, it's because I NEED them, so removing them is not going to be a practical solution. Also, this thing happens whether I've been working on a document or not, so there are no smart objects in the system at the time of closing. Another thing I mentioned is, that Adobe inDesign does exactly the same thing, and they are not subject to the same plug-ins or objects.

NO other program on my Mac does the same, they all shut down instantly.

I have to admit, that since I wrote my question, I replaced my original hard drive with an SSD and the problem has reduced drastically - but then, everything else has become faster, so the closing down thing is not such a big issue, but it would be good to get an answer, still the same.

That Photoshop writing the Settings-psp-files at quitting takes time should not come as a surprise, though.

What are the sizes of the Brushes.psp and Patterns.psp for example?

edit: see ~/Library/Preferences/Adobe Photoshop 2022 Settings

How much the writing of the psps-files determines the closing-time in your case I cannot say.
