Type layer slows down whole photoshop - Selecting, Transforming and scrolling fonts

This topic was discussed in 2017. We are i almost 2022 and still there is no fix for that. Creating any text layer slows down whole program. Searching for fonts through list is a tragedy. Selecting text layer is lagging
Adobe please do something with that.

1. Version 23.0 - but like i said it's been over 3 years...
2. Windows 10
3. Create a text layer, paste some text (better more than less) in to it.
4. Expected result: i'd like to work with the same speed as always. Actual result: Everything is lagging.

Hi there,

Sorry to hear about the text layer lag with Photoshop 23.0 on your Windows 10 computer.

To narrow down the issue could you please try deselecting "Use Graphics Processor" located in Photoshop's Preferences > Performance, then relaunch Photoshop and let us know if it helps?

Regards,
Sahil

Hi Sahil, unfortunately deselecting "Use Graphic Processor" does not solve the problem.

Can you send over Photoshop's Help > System Info dialog text to us?

You could paste it in a message here, or use a paste service like http://pastebin.com to provide a link to the full text of the System Info.

I've had enough of this. Text layers are impossible to work with in Photoshop 2021, with each release PS gets worse and worse. Just look at the video. Art layers select SOMEWHAT okay, but text layers take at least half a second to do that and that's a dealbreaker.

I've tried all possible settings from the performance section of Adobe so please don't link that to me. This also happens on a fresh windows install where there are no custom fonts installed, independent on the document size.

Before you ask, my specs should be twice as enough to handle a basic text layer selection:

24GB Ram
RTX 2060 SUPER

Intel core i7 7700k 3.6ghz

Got any magical solutions anyone? I am really getting sick of this, each release of photoshop just adds silly features while still keeping unoptimized architecture that barely holds together. Please tell me I am not the only one.

@Mateusz Wojciechowski

I apologize, but what should we be seeing in your video? I know I must be missing something.

Text layers are impossible to work with in Photoshop 2021, with each release PS gets worse and worse.

Not with every release (just for the sake of history.) When I started using Photoshop, text was pixels on the current layer, so you had to remember to create a new layer. Editing was deleting and re-typing. Letter spacing was done by selecting the pixels and moving them. Spellcheck came several versions later.

Unfortunately you don't see the moment I click on the layers, but you can see when I switch between art layers, it's fast enough, the reaction. While with text layers, it takes time for photoshop to react. Maybe you can notice that now. I just installed photoshop 2019 and the reaction is much faster, almost as fast as with the art layers (I opened the same document that I did in 2021)

Btw, I meant PS gets worse as in performance. All I see with each new release is features to attract more customers but no work is done to keep the ones that are already subscribed. Their focus is solely "get new people" and nothing gets fixed.

I used Affinity Photo and there working with layers is super smooth. The only thing they lack for my type of work is Smart Objects and artboards in Photo. Once those are in place, I'll have to switch as Photoshop is becoming unbearable.

EDIT: Just installed CS6 and text layers work perfectly. Day / Night difference. 2019 is doable but not as good as CS6... I don't know what happened to Adobe...

I have the same issue. Everything in PS works very fast.  THEN I switch the font tool, and it's super sluggish.  So annoying since I work with font art all day.  I do not have this same issue with Illustrator.  It's only Photoshop.  I have the latest updates of Nvidia drivers, Windows 10, Photoshop etc.  It was faster about 2 versions ago, but never been great.

Here's an example...  I select the Text Tool.  I click and start typing a a couple of words.  Then I go up to my fonts menu and scroll through my fonts.  Each one takes a full 1-2 seconds to render.  In Illustrator, the font of the selected text updates instantly.  So, I have to mosey on through the list and wait for lag and delays when I jump down the list as it tries to catch up with rendering the fonts I have hovered over as I move the mouse.

Specs?  No issues...

64 GB RAM

RTX 2060 KO 6 GB

AMD Ryzen 3950X 16/32 at 4.3 GHz

3840x2160 Resolution / Scale 100%

PS is using GPU

I have about 350 fonts installed.

Hopefully there is a pending solution?

Thanks!

Also, I think it might be useful to note that neither the size (px/pt) of the font nor the size of the canvas (HD, FHD, 4K, 8K) has any affect on how fast the newly selected font is rendered.  Same lag applies to all.

Here is a VIDEO comparing issue in Photoshop vs. Illustrator...

Unfortunately comparing PS to illustrator is not valid as they render text differently, one is raster one is vector. PS has to convert text to raster for you to visualize it.

A valid comparison is Photoshop 2022 vs Photoshop 2017 where the text tool worked at least 3x as fast. If you go even lower in versions back to CS6, the text tool is light fast.

But as I dwelled and asked around in forums, Adobe is in denial of the issue, blaming it always on the user's hardware and is not doing anything about it.

I am just waiting for Affinity to add some important features and then I am switching as there, things are planned thoroughly, while having less features, the software works better.

Unfortunately I did not have a good experience with the way Adobe addresses users's issues. But why would they, their financial reports are not slowing down so who cares as long as money is made

Point taken but they could simply render is as a vector until you click/hit enter then rasterize it instead of rasterizing everything that you hover over.  Isn't it that simple?

Hi

Instead of scaling, use the Text Size control in the options bar, Character panel, or Properties panel.

I'm sorry but this is just a weak response. I'm having issues too. I'm on top workstation, and yet I get enormous lag when transforming text. Sometimes is much faster than typing in values, and sometimes you just want to scale unproportionately.

... sometimes you just want to scale unproportionately

By @pikok85

To scale disproportionally, you can use the vertical or horizontal scale in the Character panel.

Jesús Ramirez explains the issues with using Transform with text in Photoshop in this video:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9P01qAn52Y8

It's not the same in Illustrator, btw. You can use Transform or the Character panel interchangeably there.

We are users on this forum, so if you want to report the lag while using Transform as a bug to Adobe, you can do that here: https://feedback.photoshop.com/

Thanks for the effort, you're missing the point though. Transform tool for text is unusable for me in PS. It's so laggy I can't even control it properly. It's a second long lag and I'm not exaggerating. I can't even use it like the guy in the first few seconds of the video. There's no preview and the transform tool jumps all over the place. I'm on 128 gigs RAM i9-10940X machine. It worked better in 2001 on my laptop.
