Beginning in PS late 2022, I noticed that wrapping layers into Smart Objects would sometimes add 300MB to the file size, resulting in mammoth PSBs. The workaround I've found for this is as follows:
Open the Smart Object and check the PS Temporarary folder for the file size.
If it seems bloated, duplicate all layers to a New file and save it to desktop. (Note the smaller file size, if applicable.)
Use Replace Contents to link your top-level Smart Object to the new file.
If there is an easier way to do this, I am desperate to hear it. If there is not an update slated to fix this, there really should be!
Thanks.
On a bloated file, open main parent image, go to file > file info > raw data and check if there is a single line message stating that there is too much info to display.
Repeat this process for any smart objects and nested smart objects within smart objects.
