Something for the weekend - Part 144 - Shielding

Thanks to all those who took part our last "Repair Shop" challenge. This week, we have something different.

There has been a lot of shielding going on around the world over the past year so I wondered what the Photoshop community would make with an actual shield.

I made this shield as an exercise in creating an "object" entirely as a material, using Adobe's 3D Substance Designer. So it is all procedural, stringing together 3D Designer's nodes, and no modelling was involved at all. I then rendered the material on a flat, square, plane in Blender 3D, using the material's height map to displace the surface and give it depth.

Now you have the shield, what can you do with it?

The “rules”:

* Anything goes, as long as it meets the forum rules on decency, copyright etc

* Anyone, and everyone, is welcome to have a go, whether you are a complete beginner or a Photoshop expert. This is not just for our forum "regulars".

* There are no prizes apart from the chance to practice, show off, or bring a bit of humour and fun. Don't be shy, join in and have a go!

To download the image below at its full pixel size, and with an embedded ICC colour profile (sRGB), hover over the image and click on the circle with the arrows at the top right. Then, when the image opens in its own window, right click and choose “Save Image As/Save Target As” (or similar depending on your browser).

I like it Jumpenjax, combining the map and the hands makes a good, symbolic, image. 🙂

The temple returns Jacob.

As an aside - I don't know what you use to embed the image, rather than the forum image button, but nothing shows in a Samsung phone browser. I tend not to click on links.

Aside, I (still) use the HTML I learned in the good old days before Jive, and which also fails in Chrome.

Once upon a time, it saved the life of a Viking in battle. Now it's a decoration.

Dave this is beautiful, and I love all the detail with the battle scars. I hope you enjoyed playing with this new technique !

"it saved the life of a Viking in battle"

Indeed, Jane, an early one still using the Older Futhark, maybe even an Erilar (descendant); and she/he was obviously intrigued by southern symbols, hence the one in the middle.

I didn't translate the old runes into a modern alphabet so the symbols I used were :

Urus - strength
Algiz - Protection
Teiwaz - Warrior

Mannaz - Man

The other symbols are :

The Valknut at the centre - symbol of fallen heroes

The Hem of Awe - in each metal circle - symbol of victory and protection

All of those seemed suitable for a shield.

Indeed, Dave. Like Jane I thought (early) Viking, until you made me realize the wider Germanic context.

Nice one Jane.

The exercise was good practice, especially when I limited myself to making the symbols using only basic shapes and nodes. The Valknut symbol in the middle took a bit of thinking through.

Certainly, Rob. Very fitting(ly), the writing is also definitely clockwise, ending in Algir after Urur.

That was a proper laugh out loud rayek.  There are at least a couple of Bob Ross fans among this forum's regular posters.  You've done an amazing job of it as well with excellent shading giving the sheilds a 3D effect.

BTW  Did you paste this directly to the thread rather than use the image upload widget.  That tends to make the image appear smaller that if the widget is used, and this deserves to be a full 1500 pixels wide.

@Trevor.DennisThank you for the nice comments. It was just a quick comp. If I'd be doing this for real, I'd be creating 3d shields in Blender, replicate the lighting setup etc. Now I did a rough job, but it works reasonably well - good enough for comical effect! 🙂

I dragged and dropped the initial image into the post. Now I used the image upload icon, but it still displays smaller than the original, and cannot be clicked to view a larger version.
