Thanks to all those who took part our last "Repair Shop" challenge. This week, we have something different.
There has been a lot of shielding going on around the world over the past year so I wondered what the Photoshop community would make with an actual shield.
I made this shield as an exercise in creating an "object" entirely as a material, using Adobe's 3D Substance Designer. So it is all procedural, stringing together 3D Designer's nodes, and no modelling was involved at all. I then rendered the material on a flat, square, plane in Blender 3D, using the material's height map to displace the surface and give it depth.
Now you have the shield, what can you do with it?
The “rules”:
* Anything goes, as long as it meets the forum rules on decency, copyright etc
* Anyone, and everyone, is welcome to have a go, whether you are a complete beginner or a Photoshop expert. This is not just for our forum "regulars".
* There are no prizes apart from the chance to practice, show off, or bring a bit of humour and fun. Don't be shy, join in and have a go!
To download the image below at its full pixel size, and with an embedded ICC colour profile (sRGB), hover over the image and click on the circle with the arrows at the top right. Then, when the image opens in its own window, right click and choose “Save Image As/Save Target As” (or similar depending on your browser).
When posting back your image – please use the Blue reply button in this first post. If posting a comment on someone else’s entry then please use the grey reply button next to their image post.
Have fun.

Mesmerising Trevor!
A small detail, but the strokes around the outside help hold it all together nicely.

Mesmerising indeed, Trevor, as Dave said.
Most importantly it brings attention to the little horse.

Which Way are things rotating?

your first one breaks on my Firefox Mack i.e, plays once then locks itself until a browser refresh... not sure if that is by design or not mate

It is the last frame is the composite of all the 113 positions.

JJ that reminds me of a previous SFTW (but I can't remember which one 😞 ) It had a multi spoked wheel so you only needed to animate it thhrough a quarter turn. At that point preceding spokes would catch up and give the effect of full rotation. The problem was that you could blink, and the wheel would appear to reverse direction.

All these spinning sheilds are making me dizzy 🙂
@JJMack - In your spinning shield - is it just me or does the middle circle appear to be spinning faster than the outer circle. I know this is not the case though.

Its simply a layer rotating clockwise its your eyes and brain messing with you. The inner hub seem to be rotating at a different rate as other elements and the outer rim's rivets seem to be rotating counter clockwise.

If you select all of the frames, and try to be careful, you can move things around, resize, transform etc. without loosing frame and layer sync.
And just to demonstrate. Each set of layers needs to be its own group, but it's always a good idea to keep things tidy when you need to manaually sync the same frames to multiple layers. Unfortunately, you can't copy a group and retain its contained layer/frame sync. You can't warp a group nor sharpen its layers (as is needed with the skewed centre shield below) without losing frame sync. For those of us lucky enough to have an ACP badge, its way easier with Animate, and I really should get round to learning it.

It's beautiful Ged, but I feel like it should mean something to us. What is the context? It's like Palpatine and his pet raven meet the Baby Jesus, and Jimmy Page gets a killer idea for a song.
