Hi,
Thanks to Trevor for creating our last 'Smörgåsbord' challenge, and thanks to all who took part in it. There were some very clever, and imaginative, images.
For this week's starter image, we have these pebbles on a beach. You could use them as a background, a pattern, a texture, or cut them out and use them as indidividual objects. How far will your creativity take you?
The “rules”:
To download the starter image, hover over the image and click on the circle with the arrows at the top right. Then, when the image opens in its own window, right click and choose “Save Image As/Save Target As” (or similar depending on your browser).
When posting back your image — please use the blue reply button in this first post and use the 'Insert Photos' icon at the top of the reply box. If posting a comment on someone else’s entry, then please use the grey reply button next to their image post.
Have fun!
Dave

Hey everyone, for my approach on this challenge, the rocks reminded me of substrate that you would use in an aquarium. So I started by taking the starter image into Photoshop, expanding the canvas size, and using generative fill to add more rocks into the scene alongside some fun sea animals. I next found a good water texture image from Adobe Stock, and adjusted the transparency and blending modes back in Photoshop to create this underwater scene.

A nice take on the image, Colby. 🙂

Stone age man:
Created using :
A head mesh from Fuse (remember that?).
Substance Sampler to build a material from the pebbles image (using AI image to material function them make it tile filter).
Substance Painter to apply the material to head model and background.
Blender 3D to light and render.
Photoshop to finish.

Thanks Jane. It was a while since I'd used Adobe Sampler's material from image functions, so it was a good chance to see what it could do now.

That's amazing @davescm I didn't know Substance could do that. You could have put a smoking reefer between its lips entitled it 'Stoned'. btw Gen Fill doesn't do cigarettes, cigars, and definitely not reefers. (whater one of them is)

Thanks Trevor - I like your modification 🙂
The Substance 3D apps are extremely useful, although the main two applications I use are Substance Designer and Substance Painter. For anyone not familiar, I've listed a very brief summary of functions below:
Substance 3D Designer - A node based app for creating procedural 3D materials complete with controllable parameters. As well as materials it can also create filters and patterns.
Substance 3D Painter - A texturing app for applying 3D materials to 3D models
Substance 3D Sampler - An app for creating 3D materials predominantly from 2D images. The app also has functions for photogrammetry (making a model from a series of images) and HDR environments.
Substance 3D Stager - An app for setting up a 3D scene and rendering it.
Substance 3D Modeler - A sculpting app which creates models using desktop or VR.
Substance 3D assets - A library of models, materials and lights.

Now that's classy. Nicely done as well with how it disappears behind her neck. The last time I got super exited about a SFTW upload I kept wondering if it was illustrated or Ai, so please tell me me that you did this Anna. It's a great idea and beautifully done either way.

Hi Trevor,
no, it's just done with Photoshop 🙂
The original photo of stones, the nice woman from the stock, and many selections based on the paths 🙂
I like using Ai, but these challenges are more interesting for me with using the classic tools.

The Devil is in the details.
