Spot healing painting black

Hi,

My spot healing brush is only painting black. It won't go away unless I zoom in and out. I was on a different discussion and tried going to preferences, general and resetting preferences on quit and it's still nothing. 

can someone please help with this? I use this brush for everything.

Also, it works on the background layer but not a new layer duplicate.

I am having the same problem. Resetting my workspace to Essentials helps but doesn't solve it. I am about to touch up hundreds of old photos so help would be very much appreciated!
