Text Tool has come to a near halt

Today suddenly my text tool has come to a screeching halt. The delay is at least half a second between typing and seeing it show up in PS. iMac has been restarted multiple times, forced restart on PS multiple times, my CPU is only running at 4% total, no other major programs open, browser closed. No preferences or anything have been touched in photoshop, so I don't need to look there or reset.

Photoshop's never been the fastest at handling text, but this is like trying to edit in 1994. Anyone have any idea what it could be?

I think you should try a reset of the Preferences. This action does more than just reverse any preferences that may have been manually changed.
