P: This Face Expression File is bad or corrupted

I keep gettting the following error when I launch Photoshop 2020 on a Windows 10 64bit machine

This Face Expression File is bad or corrupted

I assume it relates to the Default Face Expression Presets.p3f file, which a scan reveals to be OK. The application launches after I click OK but how can I get rid of the error?

I have reinstalled, tried the clean up tool and there has even been an update since it started but still it persists. Is there anywhere I can find a replacement file?

Thanks in advance

Steve

Does this work for you?

Try this solution for the "This Face Expression File is bad or corrupted" message box:

  • Quit Photoshop
  • Go to C:\Users\[username]\AppData\Roaming\Adobe in Windows File Explorer and search for "Face".
  • When you find a file called "FaceExpressionPresets.psp", rename it with .old at the end (to preserve it just in case).
  • Restart Photoshop. The file will recreate itself. If there is still an issue, the older file is still there and can be renamed again.

Have you tried resetting your preferences (these are not overwritten on install)? Hold down Alt+Ctrl+Shift when starting Photoshop (or on Mac Opt+Cmd+Shift) and choose the option to delete current settings

Hi,

It's a bit tricky to get the timing right. On a Mac, you can hold down the keys first, then launch Photoshop. If you are on Windows:

  1. Hover over the Ctrl + Alt + Shift keys with your left hand
  2. Launch PS with your right hand
  3. Immediately press down on the three keys and hold them down.

If the dialog asking to reset Preferences does not appear, quit PS and try again. You have a fraction of a second between steps 2 & 3.

Hi, is it a new error or did you have it for a long time?

Is it using Ps 21.2.1?

Hi,

Yes, it was 21.2.1 but I had it before that update.

I had to tweet Adobe Care to get this resolved. It was quite simple in the end.

I renamed the file by adding .old at the end of its name. The file is located at "C:\Program Files\Adobe\Adobe Photoshop 2020\Required" in Windows, uninstalled Photoshop & then re-installed it.

Yes, I posted the solution I got when I tweeted Adobe Care on August 3rd...

I renamed the file by adding .old at the end of its name. The file is located at "C:\Program Files\Adobe\Adobe Photoshop 2020\Required" in Windows, uninstalled Photoshop & then re-installed it.

I don't know what else to suggest. That worked for me, so I haven't tried anything else. JunFender resolved it another way [see post on Aug 03], maybe that will work for you?

I tried the rename and uninstall method and it did not work.

I manage to solve it by going to C:\Users\xxx\AppData\Roaming\Adobe in Explorer and searching for Face. I found a file called FaceExpressionPresets.psp and renamed it to FaceExpressionPresets.psp.old, restarted Photoshop and the error was gone.

This sounds by far the best solution. Don't know why Adobe couldn't have suggested that!
