TIFF file under 4 gigs will not save as tiff

Photoshop version 26.6.1  Lightroom Classic version 14.3 on an iMac 15.4.1 with lots of system resources (system should not be the issue)

This has been an ongoing issue for the last few updates. When I am finished in photoshop and go to save back to Lightroom Classic or just save to harddrive I get the message that the file exceeds the tiff allowance of 4 gig?. The latest files in question are 1.49, 1.69 and 2.64 gig files, so they are well under the 4 gig allowance. They should save as tiffs shouldn't they?

Are you using compression in Photoshop? That can make a huge difference.

You may need to use PSB or BigTIFF format if your files are too large.

No, I am not using compression. I left it on Adobe default settings. They will save out as PSB so I will just leave it alone for now. Thakns for the reply 🙂

'...They should save as tiffs shouldn't they?'

It really depends on what you have done to those images.

For example, all the following can increase the file size :

- Adding layers
- Adding smart objects
- Increasing detail (e.g. sharpening)
-  Increasing noise (which does not compress as well)
-  Increasing bit depth (16 bit files take up twice the bytes per pixel as 8 bit)

- Adding metadata.

Conversely, file size saved to disk can be decreased using compression (Tiff offers various forms both lossless and lossy).

They have quite a few layers, but no smart object layers or noise reduction, all of them are 16 bit. It just seemed weird that I used to be able to save them as Tiffs but now similar sized files have to be saved as PSB files. Thanks for the reply 🙂
