New Here ,
Sep 17, 2025 Sep 17, 2025

Hello,

I wanted to reach out to see if anyone could help teach me how to tighten a tie.  I am a graduate student at Ohio State University and haven't taken photoshop since 8th grade. This is valuable for me becuause I'd like to use for my LinkedIn and other platforms. 76CBEB1A-D4DB-4B69-A150-19C5D36D0EECHeadshot 8.28.25 3.jpeg

You need to make a selection of the tie at least, and copy it to a new layer.

I also copied the colar to a new layer so we can hid the moved tie behind it if need be.

The pen tool is the best means of making that selection.

If we move the tie it will leave a gap at the bottom, so instead I have used Free Transform, and Ctrl dragged the top corner handles.  Note that the knot has gone behind the copy we made of the colar.

I tried removing the original tie position with Generative Fill, but

Hello @tyler_2018 ,

Without going into any advanced tools, you can use the attached file as a reference to make rudementory edits to get your tie tightened. What I did was break the tie into multiple layers, move the knot up and just stretched the lower tie up to fit. Then used the stamp tool to clean up the shirt a bit and created to shadow layers and painted in the shadows I wanted. Feel free to play around with that file to edit to your liking and hope it works well enough to get you started! Feel free to reply here for more specific questions and myself and other experts can reply with other ways to do this with the many option photoshop has to offer!

I tried removing the original tie position with Generative Fill, but it did not do a great job.

I tried again asking it to remove the tie, and it was no better.

So I had to use the clone tool.  It was easy to do because the short is white with not too much shading.

Finally replace the shading on our left of the knot below the coloar, and fix the tie on the right of the knot.

This was done by carefully selecting the area and using the clone tool and pain brush
