Tool Menus not showing and saving issues

I'm running PS 23.5.4 on an iMac with Catalina. I upgraded from CS6 recently, which ran flawlessly for ten years. This new version gets more glitchy by the day. Today the flyout menus on the toolbar have stopped working. I can toggle between the options by holding the Alt key and clicking on the tool, but the flyout menus no longer appear. Also, when going to save a file I have to wait a full minute before the saving options window appears. I am just starting a big job and have wasted an hour already today. Please help!

Further to this post. The above problems happen when opening NEF (Nikon RAW) files via the Camera RAW plugin from my D810. I just tried with the saved jpeg of one of these, and everything works perfectly again. ??

Bizarrely, regarding the Save As command not working... If I work on an image and then Save As, nothing happens. But if I move to the next desktop in Mac OS the dialog window immediately appears, and when I click "Save" is flips back to the Photoshop Desktop again... Go figure!

What year is your iMac?

How much free HD space do you have on your Macintosh HD?

What do you have for space in your Photoshop Preferences/Scratch Disk?

In Catalina, go to Apple System Prefs/Security and Privacy and make sure Photoshop is listed in Full Disk Access.

I have 35Gb space available on the hard drive. Photoshop is listed in Full Disk Access as mentioned.

Unfortunately CS6 was built for your 2013 iMac. Newer versions takes you closer towards incompatibility.

Example: 35 GB is not enough HD space to effectively run Photoshop depending on your workflow. You could be running out of HD space and scratch disk, thereby causing cascading issues until it fails completely.

Also your 2013 iMac is right on the fringe of meeting recommended specs for current Photoshop builds - the 780M chip is slower than most current graphics cards and the processor may be struggling if Photoshop is not the only process running.

One thing to try is to go to Photoshop/Preferences/General and click "Reset preferences upon quit" and relaunch PS.

The second thing is to go to Photoshop/Preferences/Technology Previews and check "Deactivate Native Canvas".

Thanks for that! Much improved now. Tools appearing as they should, saving OK. Very odd. This machine should be OK according to the System Requirements Adobe specifies. And that was a typo - I have 350GB of space on a 1.2Tb hard drive. My pictures are accessed from a 6Tb G-Drive. Where does the time go? Seems I only bought this new iMac yesterday and it's been ten years... Never a glitch.

@razzetti glad to hear that resolved. Yes 350 is much more breathing room that 35.

The system requirements posted are minimum - which means yes Photoshop will launch, but people take that as carte blanche. The heavier your workload, the more power you'll need. Note there is also a column for recommended system specs, again I take that as a starting point, not a goal.

Seems to be full of very random quirks. I installed the new Photoshop and upgraded the OS to Catalina a few weeks back and initially it seemed to run perfectly. I'm working in PS with no other apps open. Your suggestion "The second thing is to go to Photoshop/Preferences/Technology Previews and check "Deactivate Native Canvas" seemed to resolve the tool flyout menu issue, but now when I go to use the Type Tool and position the cursor over the image, the second I click on it the entire screen goes black. I looked up this issue on the forum here, and the cure is - wait for it - to go to Photoshop/Preferences/Technology Previews and UN-check "Deactivate Native Canvas"... So it's one or the other? Also, when I go to "Save As" after working on a picture, nothing happens until I flip out of the active desktop in Mac OS and then straight back into it. The second I do that, the save dialog opens and everything's fine. It's nuts really!
