Tools fly-outs not working?

Hi

I'm using a 15" work MacBook Pro (2016, touch bar, Sierra 10.12.6).

Whether I use it with, or without, my Wacom Intuos Pro, the fly-out options do not work unless I simultaneously press Control on the keyboard first.

While it's good this works, it's very clunky. On previous macs I used to be able to select them with my pointer (be it mouse or pen).

Any ideas?

What are you saying – that a simple press with the Brush Tool for example used to raise the contextual menu for you instead of actually brushing?

Or did you use the button on the pen?

Yes, the secondary tools on the fly-out menu.

I am saying that simply pressing on the Brush Tool, as the example, would enable the fly-out, as it does in Illustrator and InDesign. I don't know why Photoshop has changed. The button on the pen does nothing either. I have to press the Brush Tool and hold Ctrl down at the same time to get the contextual menu. I didn't used to have to do that.

Both?!  

In order to access the contextual menus, you have to select an item from the Toolbox.

In order to get the contextual menu to flyout from the main item, I have to press the tool and hold down Control at the same time.

This has changed. I used to be able to do the same as with other Adobe menu systems - select on a tool and the contextual menu would pop up without having to use Control.

This has changed.

Not for me (Adobe Photoshop Version: 2017.1.1, Mac OS 10.12.6), what is your Photoshop version and what have you done for trouble-shooting so far?

My Photoshop version is 2017.1.1

I have not done any trouble-shooting other than trying to find a solution online, but come back with nothing.

I'm not sure screenshots are helpful in this instance as you can't see my hands

Selecting a current tool from the Toolbox is fine.

In order to get the contextual menu fly-out, I have to hold down CONTROL on my keyboard and press again. Then I get a small floating Menu Icon (which I can't screenshot). The tool used to open the contextual menu instinctively on selection, as it still does with the Illustrator and InDesign apps.

It is just Photoshop which has this issue.

I would recommend you go the full trouble-shooting gamut.

But I suspect the issue may be on the OS side and Photoshop does not gets the correct input.

Two things I would try before you get too far down the rabbit hole:

1. Reset your toolbar to the default: Click and hold (you might have to control click based on your issue) on the elipsis (...) icon and click "Edit Toolbar," then choose "Restore defaults."

2. If that doesn't work, try restoring Photoshop's preferences to default:

Thanks for the info. Unfortunately it didn't work.

It's such a weird thing (I don't think c.pfaffenbichler understood?)

I have just reinstalled Photoshop but this hasn't changed things... I still need to use Control to open the flyout (contextual) menu for the Toolbar... I wonder if it's a bug as I have the latest software and hardware.

If it was a bug it should affect all users with the same OS/drivers/hardware-setup as you.

Which might result in more posts on the issue for which reason I suspect the issue to be local to your computer, possibly related to some system setting or plugin.

Mind you, that is a suspicion not a claim.

Have you used the Cleaner Tool before re-installing?

Have you performed all the trouble-shooting routines yet?

Hi

I followed the Cleaner Tool to the letter - installing Photoshop and running the app, and restarting my MacBook Pro as requested.

Now my Creative Cloud account has completely disappeared. None of my apps are available - and the icon has gone from my menu bar.

Please advise asap as I am at work.

As indicated in the lines

  • Double-click the application’s uninstaller.
  • From the menu in the upper-right corner of the script window, select the version of the application you want to remove. Press Return.

you were supposed to uninstall only the application in question, in this case Photoshop.

Did you inadvertently clean the whole Adobe Creative Cloud?

If so you have to install it anew.

I only removed Photoshop actually... but it also removed Illustrator and InDesign (not my other Adobe apps).

Fortunately I had help from an Adobe Agent.

I will seek their advice about Photoshop.

So.... the saga continues...

Today I tried the following:

• Reset Toolbar prefs
• Reset Psd prefs
• Uninstalled and re-installed Photoshop
• Used CC Cleaner Tools ( which randomly deleted Photoshop, Illustrator, InDesign & my CC access so I had to get in touch with...)

Adobe Agent Support:
• Fixed Creative Cloud disappearance - reinstalled, and put me through to Photoshop app support agent...
• Remotely accessed Photoshop and Toolbar > submenu selection worked for him. (Still did not work for me.)
• He suggested a hardware issue, so I had a scheduled call from:

Apple MacBook Pro Support:
• Set up a new 'Test' user on my MacBook Pro.
• Photoshop Toolbar selection worked without having to select Control key (!!!)

• Photoshop Toolbar submenu selection still doesn't work for my user account without having to use the Control key.

This points to the issue being something within the app.

I can see I will have to make another call on Monday but it already took up too much time today and the issue is still not fixed.
Setting up a new 'Test' user account on my MacBook Pro has been the only thing that has worked.

If anyone has any insight to this...

Sorry to hear of your ongoing troubles. But:

This demonstrates clearly that there is a problem with your user account, not with the software. The fact that it works properly under another user account indicates something corrupt in your own user profile.

The CC Cleaner exercise should have remedied this, but apparently not... I'm not sure what to suggest here, but some Adobe staff may be able to recommend a file to be purged to reset this behavior.

BTW, just a point of clarification from the earlier messages: CC Cleaner removes entire VERSIONS of Adobe Creative Suite and Creative Cloud. All applications within a version, not specific applications. However, I've found that even after running it, there are some times when you may have to go spelunking through your system folders deleting miscellaneous things that still manage to be left behind.

I've had the same problem for years on PS CS6.  I rarely use the flyout menus so always forget how to get them back with the "CTRL" key and have to go find internet to look this up and continue  I just chalked it up to one more of those annoying things Adobe did to make you give them 200 bucks a year for things you don't use after having given them thousands over the years they developed the software.

PS, I've never been able to find any way to edit the tools.  No elipsis in my menu and Edit shows no options for returning to default either.
