Trying to learn pixel art but photoshop appears broken, please help.

Anything I draw in the white areas doesn't appear on the canvas but in the layers window also there's this strange gradient on the majority of the pixels which something does appear on the canvas.

Go to Preferences > Technology Previews... and check "Disable Native Canvas" - then restart Photoshop. Does the problem still occur?
