I'm trying to copy text from Word into PS, as I've one around 45 million times in the years I've been using PS. Some of the text is overlaid on other bits. The leading is compeltely inconsisten. When I backspace after a big gap has been left another big gap results.

I thought Word might be the problem. I saved the text as Text. No improvement. I thought maybe something had been corrupted in the application, so I uninstalled it, and then insstalled a newsr version of Photoshop. Exact same problem. Absolutely maddening!

My kingdom for a solutiion!

Hey @johnmendelssohn. Welcome to the Photoshop community. I'll help you figure this out. What version of Photoshop and the macOS are you working on?

Does this happen with all Word docs? Even the ones that you've worked on in the past? If yes, please share a few sample Word docs so we can check this.

Just to be sure, ensure no stale preferences in your Photoshop. Go to the location of the preference folder below and rename it to backup. https://helpx.adobe.com/photoshop/using/preferences.html

  • macOS: In the Finder, hold down the Option key when using the Go menu > Library > Go to Preferences/Adobe Photoshop [version] Settings
  • Rename the Adobe Photoshop folder by adding a .old at the end. (Adobe Photoshop 2023 > Rename > Adobe Photoshop 2023. old)

These changes will give a fresh start to Photoshop as a fresh install. Let me know how it goes.

Thanks!

John, MS Word is know to cause formatting problems when copying text into Photoshop.  You could try selecting the text in Word and using Ctrl Spacebar to strip the formating before copying to Photoshop, but I usually copy it into Windows Notepad, and then copy it from notepad to Photoshop.

Here's the deal, though, Trevor — it happens even when I've saved the text I've written in Word as Plain Text or RTF. Moreover, until a few days ago, I'd been importing Word text into Photoshop without any trouble at all.

The least I would do is use Paste w/o Formatting.
Word too may have an option to copy w/o formatting.

@johnmendelssohn

  • Is the text Point text or Paragraph text?
  • Layers panel: how many Type layers do you have? If more than one, you may need to merge the text together
  • Character panel: Click an insertion point in the text > Ctrl+A> Set the leading to Auto (for now) > set the Baseline Shift to 0
If you are sure of the settings, post a screen shot
  • Paragraph panel: select the text > set space above and below to zero.

You might also reset your Type tool. Right-click the Type tool in the options bar and Reset Tool.

Show screenshot that include panels and selected text if you need more help.

When I import text (from both Word or Pages, in eithr of their proprietary formats, or as Plain Text or RTF), the vertical spacing is weird. Half of paragraph 3 will be superimposed on the bottom of paragraph 2, and when I try lower it manually, bu placing the cursor at the beginning of Paragraph 3 and hitting RETURN, the text actually goes up, rather than down!

I've tried the EDIT > Paste without formatting, but to no avail.
