Unable to save in Photoshop 2020

Hi there,

Can anyone help? I am on a Mac. When I am in Photoshop 2020 and try to File>Save, the progress bar the bottom of the window freezes at 0%. 

I end up having to force quit the application and lose all my work.

Which version of MacOS and where are the files stored?

It's the newest version MacOS - Catlina v10.15.2 a d the files are stored on an external hard drive that I have plugged into my Mac at all times.
