There are strange white boxes that appears in the image only when I go to export it.   I've included an example below.  Massive time-waster trying to solve for these 'phantom' boxes - please help.

Thanks!

After an hour of toiling fruitlessly, a friend suggested I try flattening all the layers and that solved it.  I don't understand why that works, but it did.

But now the Layers are gone …

If you can undo that or still have a layered copy:

Does turning on Photoshop > Preferences > Performance > Legacy Compositing and restarting Photoshop have any bearing on the issue?

Does turning off »Use Graphics Processor« in the Performance Preferences (Photoshop > Preferences > Performance > Graphic Processor Settings) and restarting Photoshop have any bearing on the issue?

Unfortunately this is no proper solution as it invalidates GPU dependent features (like the Rotate View Tool and some Filter acceleration for example) but it indicates problems with the GPU driver or the OS.

Unfortunately we are seeing reports of graphics card-related problems on both Windows and Mac computers. This spans the range from new, top-performing products like AMD Threadrippers and Apple M3 computers to older, more marginal systems. I've been hit with the latest bug affecting AMD cards on Macs. Hopefully when the dust settles on all of the big changes we will have more stability.

Adobe is rewriting the graphics engine in Photoshop, while Apple is transitioning to a new system architecture and Microsoft is phasing in Windows 11. Add the current rush to integrate AI features and neural computing plus the big push on mobile and that's a lot for developers to handle.

And could you please post more meaningful screenshots with the pertinent Panels (Layers, Channels, Options Bar, …) visible.
