Every image I open in CC has a grid. I have to use 'control H' to get rid of it. A nuisance.

You can turn the grid on and off via View > Show > Grid. Control + ' (quotes key) will toggle it as well.

Adding to the correct reply from @Semaphoric , Ctrl+H will hide/show whatever is checked in the View > Show menu. Unchecking an item in the Show menu turns it off.

Me too, it suddenly became the default. I don't want to be required to press command-h with every [removed] image. Is there a way to have files open without the grid visible, as a default?

Did you uncheck the Grid in View menu > Show as suggested earlier in this thread? Cmd+H hides/shows everything that is checked in View menu > Show.
