A .PSDT file is a Photoshop Document Template, like a .DOT for word. The difference to a normal .PSD file is that it opens as "untitled" and requires you to save it as a new file, preserving the original from overwriting.

I was curious too and tested it a minute ago.

I guess I am more wondering if it differs as psb does from psd, in handling large format.

Just thought maybe psdt, was a next step up...

FWIW I am on Windows 10 and 2015.5 (updated today) and have the same options as  *.PSDT)

I can't find anything in any release notes explaining the file type.

Right click > Properties.  What info are you getting about the file? I'm wondering if it's a Temp or Backup that your system is creating.

Nancy, have you updated recently?

I am running Windows 10 and have Photoshop CC 2015.5

I have no clue about the PSDT. This thread was the second result in a search on Google, and it wanted to search for PSD. There isn't even anything about it at the College of Wikipedia!

I saved the same document with the outdated MIME type as a GIF animation, and I got these results:

PSD 88,177,852 bytes

PDD 88,177,852 bytes

PSDT 88,177,644 bytes it makes the file smaller?

PSB 88,800,040 bytes

I tried with another file a JPG that's 1920 1200.

PSD 6,944,994 bytes

PSDT 6,944,994 bytes

Then I tried with the original Canon's RAW CR2 file

PSD 106,606,423 bytes

PSDT 106,606,867 bytes

PSB 106,627,615 bytes

I've only seen one PSB file end up being smaller than the PSD, and other than that after a computer crash (had to replace my laptop's battery) a PSB used inside the "Photoshop Temp111111111" file, and when you want to edit the contents of a smart object, which is also created in the "Username\AppData\Local\Temp" folder.

Still, I have no idea what a PSDT file is.

PSDT results: smallest file, same size, in the middle kind of like the Porsche Cayman.

I do agree until adobe releases information regarding the new "PSDT" file, I am not sure how it would benefit you at the moment. But I am sure it will in some way later on, I decided to drag both files into a text editor to see if any of the structural information was different and there is only thing different between the files, the "PSD" is classed as a photoshop file the new "PSDT" is named just after the file name of your document.

Just guessing..  Maybe it's coming from data that's written to the file by another app like Bridge or Lightroom...

It's a new format available in CC only. You can actually open it in older versions, too, but not through "open". Choose "open as" instead and it'll open as a usual psd. (Or you can also rename it and manually change the file extension into .psd.)
Other than that, it behaves like an Illustrator .ait - as LianParma already said.

That's interesting Gene.  It had passed me by, and it looks like it might be genuinely useful.  There's some more here.

I have not read it yet, but templates are something I definitely think I will use.

Thanks to Dopperthingie for the heads up.
