Why are Brush Masks disappearing?

Why are Brush Masks disappearing from latest image version but then reappear when using heal and clone tools?

I've attached a couple to images that show the problem or mistake on my part.

Previous brush masks of eyes only reappear when I use the clone or heal tools on the eyes. Then the bluer/brighter brush masks reappear as here:

But then go away when the clone or heal tool is completed. The eye masks do not show up in current version.

Does your use of the Apple pencil mean you are using the iPad version of Photoshop?

Yes, I'm using PS and LR mobile versions for iPadOS. Apple Pencil 2nd. iPad Pro 5th. It just started happening with the first photo of a new set of photos that I took today. Wouldn't think it would have anything to do with camera settings but ?
