Why does photoshop open up w/ the last photo in it, if I didn't save my project?

Just messing around with the new Photoshop, I had been using  Photoshop CS4 version 11.0 before today!  Anyway, I didn't save my project on purpose, then shut down Photoshop. When I relaunched the app, it opened up with the photo I was messing around w/, the one I didn't save.  The layer is locked, Photoshop won't let me delete it.  How do I get rid of it, and how do I prevent this from happening again?

@LosFelizGirl

This is just a guess, but it sounds like you have a PSDC file on the Creative Cloud.

@LosFelizGirl

In Photoshop menu > Preferences > File Handling > choose "On your computer" to save PSDs on your computer." The default is to save to the Creative Cloud, and these are PSDCs, which are automatically saved.

Learn about Cloud documents here:

Most of us prefer saving on our computers and choose "On My Computer".

"The layer is locked, Photoshop won't let me delete it."

  • If you have only one layer, you can't delete it. Create a new layer, then you can delete the existing layer.
  • To unlock a Background layer, click the Lock icon once

Does this answer your question or is it something else?

Oh yeah, the cloud. Will check when I get home! Can I delete this document from the Creative Cloud?

I did that trick where you create another layer to delete the locked one before I posted my question. I've used this move many times before. The locked layer became unlocked, and I was able to delete it, but I am now unable to delete the new layer. It doesn't have a lock

icon on it, photoshop just won't let me delete it.

thanks for you help!

Hi @LosFelizGirl

Yes, you can delete the file. Photoshop creates a folder called "Creative Cloud Files" and you'll see it there, or try https://assets.adobe.com/cloud-documents and click the three dots under the image.

You have to have one layer, so if it's the only layer it cannot be deleted. You can Cmd+A (Select menu > All) and press the Delete key to delete the contents of the one layer.

Let me know if you need more help,

Jane
