Why is Photoshop Terrible on Windows but not on mac? Lots of slow downs, crashes, etc,...

I've been dealing with slow downs and random crashes when closing files for months now. I've tried just about everything to get this to run.

I'm currently trying to save out a Jpeg via Save for Web and it's still loading up the initial preview.

I work with huge files, ~220 mb Jpegs, ~150+ mb tifs, 5-20 GB PSB files, and so forth. I've recently upgraded my machine to the following specs:

5950X ryzen 9

128 GBs of 3600 mhz Ram

8 TBs of SSD M.2 Storage, NVME and Standard, all on PCIE Gen 4

3090 ti (i do gaming on a the side as well)

plenty of cooling

Yes all the same issues I have on my windows machine dont happen on my M1 Max laptop (work computer) that I use at home but dont always bring it back home from the office.

Main issues, Save for Web drags to load and good luck to me if I try to scale it down even further. Literally took ~15 mins to get the preview to show up. Yet, on my M1 Max Macbook and a 2019 Imac, I can get it done in a fraction of that time.

When I have multiple docs open, I have made it a process to save every file I need saved before I close anything. After I close a document I dont need anymore, whether its a smart object that I was adjusting, a file I'm picking up a layer or referencing something on it, I close it and randomly it'll just crash photoshop.

Again these are issues I constantly deal with on windows but not mac OS.

Can I do anything to speed some of this stuff up?

Troubleshooting I've done:

Everything from the preferences reset, to setting up the ideal performance settings, I have 4 different M.2 SSD scratch disks, each about 1-2 TB's of free space, either using my PCIE gen 4 slot or 1 of which is a raid 2 TB hooked up to a USB 3.2 type C.

Hi @ronv_LR I'm a Windows 10 user. It's an interesting issue you describe. I'm pretty sure the maximum total pixel dimensions in Save for Web are about 8200 px in width or height. I just tested this with a smaller file at 6720 px, and it did take at least 30 seconds or so to render, but it did get there. What are your image dimensions?

I kept forgetting to reply to this. For file sizes, I work mostly in print so our file sizes are massive. Your 6720 squared sized dimensions would be ideal for me if that met some of the out door specs we have to guarantee. Some of the stuff I do is over double that. Here's the file I was working on that I tested on both machines.

Normally this would be the first thing you turn to if you had the same issue on 2 different machines but the kicker is that I dont. I have a Windows machine that has just about the same specs as an imac. The windows machine is taking over 10 mins to get the preview to do the initial process on Save For Web but the iMac does it in less than 1. Thats my concern, thats my frustration. That and a few other things.

I'd post this in the "Bugs" subsection. Include as many system details and specifics as possible.

This is certainly not a general Windows experience. But there have been hints of particular problems with Ryzen CPUs, and IIRC some of the engineers have called for specifics to look closer into that.

This has nothing to do with the file sizes. A reasonably well-speced desktop machine will handle this with flying colors. The one thing you should do is disable PSB compression, that will cut down open and save times dramatically, down to perhaps 10-15 % depending. Although I don't think that's the actual problem here.

@D Fosse, There are no maximum pixel dimensions in Save for Web anymore? If so, that's good to know, as I was wrong about that.

No, that part is correct 🙂 It's still 8192 pixels. But that doesn't mean it won't load (albeit slowly), it will just be reduced to that size limit.

But I don't think that's the underlying problem here. I have a hunch that Ryzen is the line of inquiry to follow up here. There have been quite a lot of similar cases, and I know the engineers are eager to bite into it. But they need reproducible cases.

Thanks for the reply. Was not aware of the ryzen issues, but i mean, you cant compete with their specs and the prices. Anyways, I'll repost this there.

If a mod see's this, maybe you can close this out? not sure how to do it myself if at all possible.

I originally posted this on the Discussion side but was made aware it's more of a bug. I've got the specs of both machines for comparisons. Both are "fairly new", released right around the same time so they're pretty much apples to apples (pun not intended).

Both machines have access to high speed scratch disks, my work iMac is hooked up to a large volume raid array via thunderbolt 3 I believe. My PC is hooked up to a USB 3.2 raid 0 2 TB scratch. Despite this, I dont believe this to be the issue here.

My main concern is a major issue I've been dealing with for months. One of the major features I use daily is the "Save for Web" export. I work at a creative marketing agency where we end up creating and building print ready PSD/PSB files that can be upwards to 20GBs. SFW plays a major role for us since it can drastically reduce the file size of Jpegs when we need them to be a certain size w/o having to alter the art.

So my issue is, on my 7 GB file, why is Windows taking over 10 minutes for the initial preview to process when an iMac of similar specs takes less than a min? I can use the SFW and scale the image down 10 times over before my PC can even get it once, and not even be able to scale it because changing any setting would then make it spend another several minutes processing that.

Until now I've exhausted any options that are available online via other support forums and "try this" threads. I've done everything to remedy this on the PC since thats where this issue is. I just dont understand why I'm having all these issues when I can remote to my work computer and have a better experience despite being on a limited connection and having a semi blurry screen (pixelation due to bandwidth of Jump Desktop).

Does anyone have any insight on something that I'm missing that I need to change/alter in system files or preferences? I mean I've done it all from max ram in photoshop, to setting up several scratch disks, to reducing vram. I just don't understand the descrepency here. How are they so different, same photoshop, just slightly different machines.

Posted the specs of both machines along with the size of the file I tested (really this shouldn't matter but just in case).

Pro-Tip: You can use Bride>Image Processor Pro and check the Save for Web option to automate all of your output and bypass the long neglected SFW UI in Ps.
https://sourceforge.net/projects/ps-scripts/files/Image%20Processor%20Pro/v3_2%20betas/

We've been begging Adobe for more than a decade now to install this as a default utility, but they're refusing. Such a shame as countless thousands of hours have been wasted by professionals who don't know that this tool even exists.

Does this still work with the latest CC? I see the last time this script was modified was back in 2016.

Hi @ronv_LR thank you for the post.  To be able to dig into this further, we would need the full system info from Ps on the Windows machine.

Launch Photoshop, and select Help >System Info...and copy/paste the text in a reply.

Thank you,

@CoryShubert Seems like a straight copy and pasting that info keeps getting deleted after posting it. So here it is in a notepad.

Thanks for the info @ronv_LR, one thing we see is your memory for Ps set to 85%, we suggest to not go over 70%.  Your graphics driver is also 3 months old, you should update that if there is one.

Will pass this on to the team to see if they can find anything else that might be an issue.

Thank you,

@CoryShubert the 70% info would still apply with 128GB of RAM?

Hi @PECourtejoie  if you’re just running Ps, you have a ton of RAM, have it higher than 70% might make sense, but if you’re working with that much ram, it’s likely youre need for OS resources also goes up - so 70% is still a good rule of thumb.

Thank you,

@CoryShubert  I've tried it with both at 70% and the current 85% and I still have the same issue. Reason I have it at 85%, is that I've noticed a pretty noticeable different with my machine and having that much avail makes things like high pixel brushing with blend modes and noise a lot easier and quicker. Things like smart filters render faster as well. Like I mention, I work on files that get pretty big, upwards 10+ GBs (10Kx10K ppi @ 300 dpi min) so having more ram avail is better for me.

I'll go ahead and update the drivers and will bring up any new findings.
