Request: Photoshop Needs a Feature to Remember Individual Brush Sizes

Community Beginner ,

Hi all, I am desperately reporting a very inconvenient brush size-saving feature in Photoshop and begging for a fix.

I originally started using Photoshop, but I continually feel stressed because of the lack of a brush size memory feature. I’ve used Clip Studio Paint, which has a feature that remembers each brush's size individually. However, I want to continue using Photoshop because I love this program. Here’s a feature that I believe Photoshop must add:

I want each brush to retain the last size I used for it separately (meaning, I want each brush to remember its own last-used size, instead of sharing the same size across all brushes).

For example, as you all know, when I use Brush A with a default size of 5 and change its size to 20, then switch to Brush B and return to Brush A, the brush is no longer at size 20. It automatically reverts to its originally registered size of 5.

To make the brush remember the size I last used, I tried saving Brush A as a new brush preset and unchecked the "Capture Brush Size in Preset" option. However, when doing this, the brush only remembers the last used size, no matter whether it’s Brush A, B, or C.

For example, if I use Brush A at size 1, then change the size to 20, and switch to Brush B, changing its size to 5, when I return to Brush A, the size is no longer 20. Instead, it’s the size of 5 from Brush B. Eventually, I forget what the size of Brush A was before I switched to Brush B. You might think I could just create a new Brush A with size 20 to avoid forgetting, but I use at least 10 brushes in one illustration and change their sizes all the time. Saving a new brush preset for each size change would be chaotic and time-consuming.

To emphasize the issue further, unchecking "Capture Size" has a major flaw: All brushes made with "Capture Size" unchecked share the last used brush size. For example, if I use Brush A at size 20 for hair detail, then switch to Brush B for eye detail and change its size to 10, when I return to Brush A, its size automatically switches to 10 as well. I don’t want this—Brush A should remember its last size of 20, and Brush B should remain at size 10.

As I said, I don’t want to save a new brush preset every time I change a brush size. To clarify, I want Brush A to remember its own history of the last used size (which is 20), while Brush B should remember its own size (which is 10), regardless of which brush I switch to.

This feature is available in Clip Studio Paint and even in Blender’s Grease Pencil. I believe this is an essential feature for illustrators using Photoshop. I cannot believe that Photoshop hasn’t added this basic, must-have feature yet. I see many friends and professionals moving to Clip Studio or other programs because of this lack of feature. I love Photoshop, and I truly believe this feature would help Photoshop shine as an essential drawing and illustration tool. Please, please add this feature so I can continue using Photoshop as an awesome tool for my illustrations.

Thank you for your help, and have a wonderful day!

Not sure I am tracking with the topic. When I use different brushes and work between them I usually hold down the Shift key and use the Left/Right Caret keys. This retains the sizes I have selected. Adobe has invested a lot of time and effort in the Brushes over the years. May have missed something along the way.

Hi, I am using the most recent version of Photoshop, V 26.5. I just tried your method of pressing the Left/Right arrow keys while holding Shift. When I do that, the brush size (Brush A) doesn't change at all; it only rotates. Even after I rotate Brush A, when I switch to Brush B, it automatically loses its angle. Of course, it still shows the issue, which is: "All brushes made with 'Capture Size' unchecked share the last used brush size, resulting in the same size across all brushes." Did you change any brush settings or Photoshop settings? You seem not to have this problem. Please help me solve this issue, as I have two laptops, and both show the same problem. Additionally, my illustrator friends are also experiencing it.

As I mentioned, to clarify, I want Brush A to remember its own history of the last used size (which is 20), while Brush B should remember its own size (which is 10), regardless of which brush I switch to. Right now, the brushes with 'Capture Size unchecked' all share the same size that I last used across all brushes, rather than remembering their individual sizes that I last used individually.

If anyone knows the solution or has a plugin/script, please guide me. I'm happy to pay for a paid plugin/script, no matter the cost. I'm under tremendous stress and need a solution. Any advice is appreciated. Thank you again for your help.

Not your arrow keys, The Caret "<" and ">" keys. When I change Brush size it retains in memory. I am using Win 11

Thank you for your reply. I just tried the caret "<" and ">" keys. When I press "<" while holding Shift, it only selects my very first Photoshop brush. When I press ">" while holding Shift, it only selects my very last Photoshop brush. Can you please check your shortcut settings? I would like to know what the '<' and '>' keys are assigned to in your Photoshop. Alt + Shift + Ctrl + K is the shortcut for the Photoshop shortcut settings. Currently, "[" and "]" are the shortcuts for "Increase/Decrease Brush Size," but they show the following problem: (The brushes with 'Capture Size unchecked' all share the same size that I last used across all brushes). Please check your shortcuts and let me know. If you change any Photoshop settings that might solve this problem, please let me know. I greatly appreciate your help, and thank you in advance.

In your original post you stated you wanted to move between Brush "A" and "B". The Caret keys provide this option. Yes, Bracket keys change dimensions. If you have multiple Brushes you want to toggle between may want to assign an Action? Most PS users use the bracket keys to resize the brush. You can also change brush hardness on the fly as well.

Thank you for the link to the video and your response. I just want the feature where each brush remembers its own last used brush size, without sharing it across all brushes.

Unfortunately, the method you mentioned (Shift <, >) is not the solution I'm looking for. I'm not looking for a shortcut to switch brushes. You mentioned that 'Shift < or Shift >' changes the brush sizes and makes them remember their own sizes, but it only switches the brushes back and forth and does not remember their own last used brush size for each one. That’s the part that confuses me. 😞

Thank you again for your help and the YouTube link you provided.

I truly believe that Photoshop needs to add this essential feature, as I think it’s crucial. I’m surprised there isn’t a single script or plugin available for it. Unfortunately, I’ve searched through Google, YouTube, and Reddit but couldn’t find anything. If anyone knows of a script/plugin or has a solution, please let me know. I’ll be sure to check for replies, no matter how much time passes after I post this. Thanks for your help.
