Background:
One of the major features of Photoshop on the web (Beta) is collaboration with teammates and stakeholders, so the ability to quickly navigate around Photoshop documents should get as much priority as the ability to edit Photoshop documents. This is especially true if your collaborators are not particularly familiar with Photoshop and basic functionality such as zooming and panning is hidden away in menu options and keyboard shortcuts.
(The issue of panning via a Hand tool has already been raised by @Amanda5CA0 in an earlier post. This post focuses on zooming.)
Currently:
There are three ways to zoom in Photoshop on the web (Beta):
- Use the Zoom options drop-down menu in the header bar
- Use the keyboard shortcuts
- Use the pinch gesture if your device supports gestures
Zooming in and out via the Zoom options drop-down menu can be a painful experience. The keyboard shortcuts are excellently implemented, but may not be intuitive for inexperienced Photoshop users. Not everyone has a device that supports gestures.
Proposal:
Add a further way to zoom by introducing a Zoom tool which would sit next to the aforementioned Hand tool in the Photoshop for the web (Beta) Toolbar.
The Zoom tool should have similar functionality to the Zoom tool in the Photoshop desktop version:
- Toolbar icon is the familiar magnifying glass
- Zoom tool positioned at the bottom of the main section of the Toolbar, just above the Color chip.
- Keyboard shortcut to select the tool is Z
- Default mode is to Zoom in
- Hold down the ⌥ / Alt key to temporarily access the Zoom out mode
- Click and drag to select a specific area to Zoom in on (Personally, this is my preferred way of zooming in to check precise details; I find Photoshop's Scrubby Zoom option to be a bit too disorientating but I know many Photoshop users think it's great – so maybe a Scrubby Zoom option would be a useful addition and appear in the Options bar?)
- Double-click the Zoom icon in the Toolbar to quickly Fit on Screen
