Bits per pixel?

I have been given specifications for uploading a PDF to a database.

  • Black and White “bits/pixel:=1”
  • 600 dpi
  • 10 MB or lower

I thought they meant grayscale but apparently there is a distinction between grayscale and black & white? Can anyone guide me on how to adjust these settings, thanks very much.
