Do you want to just save the brush? With the Brushes panel open > click the options menu (in the upper right) > New Brush Preset.

this:

"

Create a brush tip from an image

  •
Using any selection tool, select the image area you want to use as a custom brush. The brush shape can be up to 2500 pixels by 2500 pixels in size.

  •
Choose Edit > Define Brush Preset.

  •
Name the brush, and click OK."

is not working, thats precisely what im saying.

Ah, OK.

Does it not perform the command at all? Defining a brush requires the image being used have some sort of grayscale equivalence. (I think I'm wording that right.) e.g., An image that contains black will appear white in the brush and vice versa.

Thanks. yes it’s 100% black

in 2018 cc it’s fine.

im wondering if it’s a bug or not.

if someone has time and both versions to try:

open up a grayscale file

make a selection with the lasso tool

fill with black

go to edit>define brush preset

that should make a custom brush (with the pencil tool selected)

my cc2019, the option isn’t selectable

I can't seem to repro. I'm able to draw using the Pencil Tool with the custom brush preset I created earlier.

Here is the Help on brushes:

Create and modify brushes in Adobe Photoshop

Just to rule it out, can you create other kinds of presets besides brushes? Gradients, swatches, etc.?

Yes. It doesn't matter how I created it either---with the Pencil Tool, Brush Tool, a custom shape from the Custom Shape Tool or any other method for that matter. Photoshop CC 2019 allows me to define a brush preset at that point using Edit > Define Brush Preset command, where I am then able to use the Pencil Tool with that brush.

So having the same problem as many can't define/create brush preset.  Size is less than 2500x2500 pixels.  I saw the correct answer says "solved. corrupt brushes preference file." My question is if that is the problem how do I find the corrupt brush preference file and do I delete it or fix it.  Thanks. Photoshop 22.3.1
