I've been fiddling with a photograph, messing about with layers, now, the image I've ended up with is shown as Recovered Jpg and I cannot get rid of it. If I try to file it, Photoshop just crashes. When I re-open PS, it's still there. What can I do?

It sounds like you enable Auto recovery and Photoshop Crashed or your system crashed or you terminated Photoshop not a normal photoshop shutdown.  That there are recovery File that Photoshop open when you start Photoshop so you can recover some of your work.
