I always had the delete cropped pixels box checked automatically but recently I've been having to select it manually everytime which isn't practical for me, any ideas how to keep it permanently checked? thanks

Try selecting the tool without an image open and changing the settings.

Mine is checked automatically. Check it and quit photoshop then come back in and see if it stayed check. It should be a "sticky" setting and stay checked. If that doesn't work, I would reset your preferences.
