I have the Graphics Card Enabled (RTX 2070 Super), 48GB of Ram (Capped at 32GB for PS) and the Lighting Effects part doesn't work since the last update.

Doesn't even show the outlines for the lights.

Hi there,

That shouldn't be happening as Lightning Effects in Photoshop is not working, let's make it right.

Which exact version of Photoshop are you using and what is your computer's OS?

Hold down the Alt key in the Lighting effects dialog and you will see the Cancel button change to Reset. Click on Reset and restart Photoshop for good measure.

If that does not help, would you mind restoring the preferences for Photoshop & see if it helps? See this article for reference: https://t.co/ulJI7cGn1G You may want to backup your settings beforehand: https://t.co/4dX7gkr36D

Also, take a look at this discussion for more details: https://feedback.photoshop.com/conversations/photoshop/photoshop-21-lighting-effects-does-not-work-d...

Thanks,

Akash

Hi

Adobe are updating the core graphics functions in Photoshop. This is driven by the operating systems of Apple and Microsoft in which the old Open GL functions are being removed in the case of Apple, or deprecated in the case of Microsoft. This means that the graphics functions that have worked for years must be rewritten to use Metal and Direct X. At the same time, Adobe are sensibly updating those core functions to deliver the additional speed we require to handle the very large files of today.

Some functionality in Photoshop, such as 3D and Lighting Effects, still relies on the older Open GL graphics functions. To make these work, an additional preference Preferences>Technology previews>Deactivate Native Canvas has been added. This can be checked and Photoshop restarted to restore 3D functions to where they were in 22.3

FYI Dave.  "Deactivate Native Canvas" does not solve the issue with Lighting Effects freezing.  It turns Lighting Effects off.

No, it does not turn Lighting effects off. It deactivates Direct X compositing and enables the older OpenGL and Open CL functions. Both 3D and Lighting effects, which use the 3D engine, rely on Open GL and therefore require that option to be checked in order to work correctly. Note after checking in preferences, you still need to click OK then close and restart Photoshop.

Thanks Dave.  It worked, but I had to reset Photoshop preferences first and then select Deactivate Native Canvas.
