new and trying to remove item after lightening pic

I am brand new to this, I was in layers to brighten the picture with the auto option. Now I cannot remove anything from the picture as I wanted to take out items in the picture after brightening it up to see.

If you used an adjustment layer to brighten your image, you may still have the adjustment layer selected in the layers panel instead of the image.
