Photoshop 2021 all versions of 22.x (including 22.4) hard crash Windows and causes computer reboot

I've tested all Photoshop 2021 versions 22.x, including the latest 22.4, and they all cause Windows to hard crash the system.   Turning off the GPU performance switch doesn't change anything.   Crash occurs upon simply opening an image file of any kind.    Finally reverted to 21.2.8 (last Photoshop 2020 version) and it works fine.    I see lots of other posts of people complaining about Photoshop 2021 crashing on both Mac and Windows, how is Adobe releasing such a broken and obviously untested product?

I got a crash after opening a jpeg file while a tiff file was open.
Crashed again simply while panning in zoom... (used to get a hang when doing that and you could save the file) Now it is a hard crash and all is lost. Rolled back one version immediatly. 2 crashes in 20 minutes.

Try trashing your Photoshop preferences. Press and hold Alt+Control+Shift (Windows) or Option+Command+Shift (Mac OS) immediately after launching Photoshop. You will be prompted to delete the current settings.

(Mac OS only) Open the Preferences folder in the Library folder, and drag the Adobe Photoshop CS Settings folder to the Trash.

This action only affects the items found in the preferences dialog box. Numerous program settings are stored in the Adobe Photoshop Preferences file, including general display options, file-saving options, performance options, cursor options, transparency options, type options, and options for plug‑ins and scratch disks. Brushes (and lots of other setting) are not affected by the above instructions for deleting preferences. You may wish to make a screen capture of the settings in the Preferences dialog to reset them prior to deleting of this file.

The thing is that I have had no crashing / freezing problems for years using Photoshop. The previous version which I re-installed also works fine. I think I will wait for another version to install since I'm guessing that others are having the same problem.

Photoshop has become unreliable (occasional crashes) on my Windows 10 64 system since the 22.x updates, but since 22.4 it's become effectively useless. It crashes most often when I use the move tool to drag a layer from one file into another, but the crashes aren't confined to that.

I've been using Photoshop since ver. 2.5 (back in 1993) and I have to say the problems I've encountered with 22.x and in particular 22.4 have been the worst.

Reverting to  21.2.9 solved the issue for me. I couldnt save, Windows hard rebooted everytime.

No, I'm running a standard Windows 10 Professional 64-bit version with a Xeon processor and 32GB RAM. The problems I've been having are in line with those that Zasifras highlighted to open this post - all of the instability I've seen with Photoshop has been since the 22.x updates. The problems first manifested with Photoshop crashing on start-up periodically with 22.x. When that happened the system asked if I wanted to send a report to Adobe, and after that it offered an advisory message on-screen that Adobe had possible solutions. The "solutions" weren't relevant to my system, however. One of the primary solutions offered was updating my graphics drivers. As my graphics drivers were and are the most recent from the manufacturer's website, that was an irrelevance. The problems became much worse (with Photoshop becoming essentially unusable for me), with 22.4. Photoshop stopped crashing during routine tasks after a hurried Adobe update released about three days or so after the severe problems appeared with 22.4. Since then it's reverted to it's earlier 22.x problem of crashing occasionally on start-up. Adobe appear to have resolved the worst of the problems for me as things stand, but there are still some tense moments on start-up while I wait to see if Photoshop crashes. So far it's only happened occasionally, but I do want to emphasise that I've been using this product since 1993 and the problems I've experienced with the 22.4 update in particular have been by far the worst in all that time.

It has definitely to do with the 22.4.x. I switched around RAM, turned off GPU accel, etc. But i never thought of reverting to 21.x. Still hasnt crashed since. Didn't suspect the Application to cause such a harsh reboot.

Hello, Photoshop 22 uses the GPU in a different way than before, and it can crash because of issues with the GPU driver.

Please try to disable native GPU acceleration in the Edit>Preferences>technology preview, or use the legacy option in the Edit>Preferences>Performance in older 22.x versions, to see if you experience the crash.

BUT: make sure to update your GPU driver,

Also, post the contents of help>system info, so that we get to know your OS, its version, the exact version of Photoshop you are running, the date and version of the GPU driver, etc.

Some machines also switch automatically the GPU between the onboard and the additional one.

I am investigating changing "Drawing Mode" to "Basic" in Graphics Processor Settings. If that doesn't stop crashes on Photoshop start-up (and I had one just as I was launching it to check current settings) I will see what happens if I un-check "Use Graphics Processor". I don't have an option to disable native GPU acceleration in the Edit>Preferences>technology preview.

I keep Photoshop up-to-date so I believe what I'm using is the current Windows version (22.4.2)

I was puzzled about your suggestion to disable native GPU accelleration in technology preview, as no such item exists in the preferences I have under technology preview. 

I have made the other change you suggested (deactivate native canvas) and will monitor Photoshop over the next few days to see if it appears to have solved the crashes on start-up. Much appreciated.

Just to update you - Photoshop has been stable since I made the last change you suggested (disable native canvas). Just for the record that's the only change I've made. I've left "use graphics processor" checked in Preferences>Performance.

I've used Photoshop many times since disabling native canvas, and it hasn't crashed at all on start-up as it did before I made the change. Adobe's updates to the 22.4 version has resolved the other problems that were causing Photoshop to crash when carrying out common tasks.

When you had crashes, did you send them to Adobe? 

If it is not too much to ask, could you disable the pref, in order to get a crash report to send Adobe?

the feedback site is a good place to post it, and indicate that you are using 22.4.2 when you hit the crash.

Adobe needs to know if there is a crasher, as the workaround (using the old code with the preference) will not be there eternally.

I sent multiple crash reports to Adobe whenever a box appeared offering me that option immediately follwing crashes. Sometimes I included comments outlining the conditions that led to the crash (such as that I'd just dragged a layer from one open file into another using the move tool, or Photoshop crashed on start-up). If I need to do it once more for completeness, please let me know.

I would suggest to search or create a thread on the https://feedback.photoshop.com site, watched by Adobe staff. Make sure to provide as many relevant details as possible, including the 22.4.2 in the title, and attach a crash report if you can.
